History lead for Years 5-8. Passionate about primary history, Irish history, teaching empire among other things. I post photos of bread and Yorkshire puddings and I’m not sorry.

Long shot, but I’m going to ask anyway: has anyone got a book of sources concerning the correspondence around MQS’s execution? There’s a photo of a draft letter to Parliament in John Guy’s Elizabeth: the Forgotten Years and it’s distracting me that I can’t fully contextualise it! #HistoryTeacher

Teaching: so all encompassing and busy that when you’re off sick you actually do life admin that otherwise you can’t do. I’ve been sorting out my phone contract for the last from my bed.

Alfred the Great’s Indian Embassy

How likely is it that Alfred the Great sent two emissaries to India in the ninth century?

What Indigenous history does not need: more white men who aren’t experts.

Late to the party on watching Civilisations: Rise and Fall (Aztecs) and why oh why is someone who isn’t an expert in this area getting so much bloody airtime. Unless I’ve missed something, he has no credentials in this field at least in comparison to the other wonderful experts. What an insult.

A cut-out of the main part of Fabio Cipolla's painting The Proposal in which a young nobleman is proposing to a young lady; both are dressed opulently, and their white wigs and clothes suggest regency era to me or a bit earlier. They are in an opulent parlour with gilded details on and around the doors, paintings on the walls like you see in old mansions, and a fancy gold screen; it's all very Bridgerton.

On top of the painting I put a comic speech bubble. The man is saying to the woman "will you do me the honour of becoming my wijf" where "wijf" is purposefully spelled in the Dutch way. This is funny for Dutch speakers, because "wijf" means something like "hag".

In English, the word “wife” means “woman you are married to”. In Dutch, the word “wijf” (more or less the same pronunciation, despite the weird spelling) means something like “hag”, “broad” or an even less pleasant word for a woman that I am not going to type here.

Let me tell you how come.

Wait… do Reform think free schools are literally free? As in, no-cost?

@carolinepennock.bsky.social Hi Caroline, one my students had an interesting question this week regarding Mexica religious belief. Did they have any specific beliefs around a solar eclipse given that it could look like the sun wasn’t powerful? Sorry if it’s a very in depth question!

My daughter is a foreign born citizen. I assume she’s included in Reform’s plans to stop “foreign born citizens” voting…except she’s white so I assume she gets a pass because she’s definitely not the sort of person he was talking about.

"Foreign-born Citizens" are actually just called citizens.

"Foreign-born voters" are just called voters

"non-citizen voters" (yes, this is a thing here in 🇬🇧) are just voters.

Farage and the mainstream media are much graver risks to British democracy, constantly spouting nonsense and worse.

If any journalists out there look at the USA in horror and wonder how it got there, this is how.

Leaving aside the fact this is Actual John Cleese, I think we need a neater term for boomers radicalised by Facebook.

Farage is playing right out of the Trump handbook. If we don’t universally reject these ‘stolen election’ narratives right away they’ll become a highly poisonous and normalised tool used to erode our democracy infront of our eyes.

As journalists working today many of us are taught to recognise disinformation when we see it and fight back against it.

Unfortunately there are some who willingly seek it out and put it on their front pages. A disgrace to the profession.
