Anyone expecting human leaders of any religious movement to be flawless paragons of goodness is setting themselves up for disappointment. That said, there is a difference between oopsy mistakes of human weakness and deliberately defrauding folks while sacralizing one's worst ideas and tendencies.

If Keith Raniere's flaws "weaken the force of what [he] accomplished" then surely Joseph Smith's or Brigham Young's flaws may have some bearing on how we value and interpret what they accomplished.
While I appreciate Richard Bushman as a historian, I have to disagree on the point that the flaws of historical church leaders like Joseph Smith does not diminish what they accomplished, inasmuch as those flaws reveal gaping fissures in the truth claims of the religion and institutions they founded.
I'll accept it but I don't have to like it.
