every rich person's fortune was built on blood. those that proclaim their fortune 'ethical' are only bureaucratically and physically distant from blood, but the suffering remains just as real as the CEOs like steve jobs that step over allies to further their own wealth

you have more in common with a homeless person than *any* member of the gentry. remember that and don't forget it -- class issues and disparities affect movements far, far more than we talk about, particularly within marginalized groups.

I really, really don't like "oh trans people are just a tiny powerless population with no impact on anything, all these laws are just a distraction" tack and believe it's detrimental to the fight for our liberation, for several reasons.
So...π§΅

Oh hey, worth pointing out again that a key point in the civil rights movement was when even its more moderate groups loudly refused (e.g. King's "Letter from a Birmingham jail") this kind of bs "compromise" because they knew where it led.

Opinion | Abandoning Trans People Would Be Costly For the Democratic Party: Here's the Simple Math
Our votes cannot be taken for granted.
So @mady.cat's in-depth analysis from just after the 2024 presidential election remains evergreen.
The Democratic party ditching trans people isn't just incredibly evil, it's electoral suicide as well:

Brown University Sold Out on Trans Rights To Restore Federal Funding
Brown University, historically a very queer institution, capitulated when it came to transgender rights, cracking down on trans care and barring trans students from sports and key facilities.
Brown's capitulation is both a searing case study in how liberal academic institutions β even those supposedly proud of their queer histories β are complying with fascism, and how trans communities and our comrades are fighting back.

don't plea guilty for fake crimes. don't send your trans "friends" to be tortured in federal prison.

it's almost like there's a reason why we tell you over and over that putting an extreme negative focus on a trans woman on the internet with a massive platform will inevitably lead to violent abuse.

By now, you've probably heard that some anti-trans Dems lost in last week's N.C. primaries.
While this is good news, there's a lot of context that much of the coverage is missing. TNN's David Forbes has a fuller picture of what's going on, and what trans communities in the state are up against.

Openly excuses treating trans care as expendable to appease a fascist federal government.

Many alleged suicides of Black trans women are in fact modern-day lynchings, report finds
Jill Collen Jefferson, the founder of JULIAN, explains what happens when a transgender womanβs death is ruled a suicide and a community calls it something else.
Every single day, Black trans women across the world are suffering from acts of violent racism and transmisogyny.
From sex work on the streets to v-coding in prisons, marginalized trans women live in a society constructed to maime and kill people who don't fit the mold of white supremacy.

This applies to many of the evils trans communities face. The far-right believes they can target us β and liberals believe they can go along with it β because they do not believe they'll face real, harsh consequences for doing so.

Redeeming them isn't the point, stopping them is.
If you flinch at that, ask yourself why you've been so thoroughly conditioned that terrible people facing any real consequences for their actions is beyond the pale.

Look "sure their views are repulsively bigoted, costing literal lives, but saying they're bad people won't accomplish anything..." was tried, at length. It got us here.
Shame, fear and anger β properly wielded β are very effective. And, yes, those who choose evil repeatedly are bad people.

Again, the removal of three awful bigots is a good thing. But we've got a bad history of natl media declaring victory in NC, then turning elsewhere. It's cost us badly.
Amount of people against quisling Dems is promising β as a sign of pro-trans support that could be mobilized outside elections...

Obviously, Josh Stein is in the governor's mansion for awhile. So there's a substantial faction of NC Dems who are fine with anti-trans laws, just rolled out a bit more slowly and with less fanfare. Historically the party as a whole's been fine with that too (e.g. the fake repeal of HB2)...

Two anti-trans laws passed in NC last year. HB805 was a slew of anti-trans measures on everything from documents to state healthcare. Vetoed, but overriden due to Majeed's support.
But SB442, sanctioning abuse of trans kids, passed with *nine* Dems in support. Democratic Gov. Stein signed it...

Opinion | Old Betrayals and New as N.C. Dems Pass Anti-Trans Laws
North Carolina Democrats had solid election results last year, amid promises to hold the line against the far-right. But two horrific anti-trans bills just became law thanks to Democratic support, wit...
Some background: I've lived in NC all my life. I've covered politics here for 20+ years. I was in the trenches during the fight against HB2.
I did a longform piece last year on NC Dem collaboration on anti-trans laws and the history of repression they're part of. Worth a read for more context:

I did the math once and the cost of covering gender healthcare Medicaid for all 180,000 trans recipients is around $1 billion dollars. For *ten years.*
That's the amount of money being burnt in Iran every single day, to bomb schoolchildren.

That brings us to the last warning sign. One reason I wrote the article linked above last year and re-emphasized the history of HB2 recently.
When the chips are down, NC Dems β including ones who run as vocal allies β have a long, long history of treating queer and trans rights as expendable.
