Wherever you go in the Autism Simulator, a sitcom laugh track begins to play whenever you are sad, and somebody bursts into tears when you crack a joke.
"You can leave the escape room if you follow my instructions carefully."
*They follow the instructions carefully*
"Wow, what a little showoff you are! No, you can't leave the escape room. Why would you think that?"
Thatβs such a big piece that this type of thing often misses. Itβs not just that itβs too loud, too bright, too itchy, etc, but also that everyone around us is telling us weβre wrong about it. When they do simulators like this, they might portray some of the sensory overload pretty wellβ¦
5) Everyone speaks in pig latin. No normal speaking volumes, only shouting or whispering.
4) They encourage you to be yourself and talk about the things you enjoy - and then criticize you for being obsessed and that they think itβs weird that youβre so into [insert special interest here].
βCanβt you talk about anything elseβ¦?β
3) Itβs either too bright or too dark the entire time. The only lights option is overhead, fluorescent, and has a high pitched humming sound (but everyone in the room denies it).
2) People are ambiguous all the time and seem to talk in code. You can ask what they mean, but everyone seems threatened by basic questions for reasons you donβt understand. They call you rude or never answer your questions because, βIt goes without saying.β
You canβt ever tell who is your friend.

1) People tell you youβre wrong about your basic internal experience for a couple hours
βNo, it isnβt itchy. The lights arenβt too bright. Itβs not loud. Youβre being too sensitive. Itβs not that crowded. Itβs not that big of a deal. It wouldnβt hurt you to look at me.β

um what do you mean "what's an em dash?" em is the dash's name
On March 10, 1913, abolitionist Harriet Tubman died at approximately 91 years old. Her birth year is believed to be around 1822, though the exact year is uncertain due to the lack of official records for enslaved people at the time.
In a recent interview, Professor Karen Hoyland argued that women who claim to be autistic are just angling for a diagnosis, since researchers like her have made the prospect of autism so attractive.
He gets a lot of time to think. I'm not entirely sure it's healthy.
#TimeTravelAuthors 11. There has to be another explanation for why I can do what no one else seems to be able to do.
So that just leaves the possibility that no one else is real. Maybe this whole world isn't real. Maybe I'm imagining everything, more or less. It really makes you think, doesn't it?
Just because I was able to accomplish a Herculean feat does not mean the task has not felt nearly impossible
I am not unscathed!
& people like Uta Firth are trying to tell people like me that our struggle (which creates >9 x higher risk of suicide) does not exist
do you see how that's a problem?
Both of my parents were born in El Salvador. My mother moved here when she was 3 and my father when he was 6. My Dad says that when he was in high school it was hard to talk to his parents about what happened that day sometimes because he only knew the English words for the things that happened at school and his parents only knew the Spanish ones. They still managed to communicate somehow. My Mom's father died a few years ago, so we live with my grandmother. We call her βAbuelita,β of course.
JoaquΓn is a US citizen, but I wouldn't be surprised if his grandma is a permanent resident.

Iβm developing Plodding Recovery, a narrative game about a protagonist facing mental health struggles and slowly moving forward step by step.
I implemented the transition to the 'Dialogue Screen', where you interact with a character to raise their satisfaction.

The problem with lifeboats is that theyβre temporary. You climb in because the water below is all hunger jagged mouths of waves snapping at the wreckage. A narrow little promise that says stay still and you wonβt sink. The sea keeps circling, rows of white foam like grinning jaws. Because the truth is it was never meant to travel. Just to hover without direction surviving. And thatβs the quiet danger of it: a lifeboat can keep you alive for a very long time in a sea of teeth but it is not escape.
The problem with lifeboats
is that theyβre temporary.
You climb in
because the water below
is all hunger
jagged mouths of waves
snapping at the wreckage.

Every so often I have a little cackle about being an autistic consultant who works in communications and change management π
Make sure you use β¦ to indicate someone trailing off, or - to indicate them getting cut off; it'll help readers know how to interpret your words.
"Heyβ¦"
"Hey-"
See the difference in energy? The first is laissez-faire; the second, urgent. Only using periods (or, full-stops) is boring!

She would prefer her food to be more like what she was used to. They eat rather a lot of it in the alternate reality. Sometimes the food is really all she has available to pay attention to at meals.
She should try reliving a few years of my life if she thinks it's been such a treat.
one reason itβs REALLY upsetting is because it trivializes
1) our struggle
2) our relief
3) desire to help others like us
& like, I could have died! The suicide statistics are 9x higher for adults like me (& many of you)!
I hope a pen bursts in her purse & she loses her passport somewhere
Just noticed the part of the question about whether it's beneficial. Very much so for Sophia. It's one of her biggest coping mechanisms.
Sophia isn't much of a daydreamer, although there's a whole chapter titled A Mid-Morning Snack's Dream, so it's not like it doesn't happen. Her imagination really only shows in the impressions the food gives her until the latter chapters.
JoaquΓn has some imagination, but he doesn't use it much.
I was going to say I've always been impressed by your ability to keep everyone's characters straight.
Susan B Anthony
The contributions of Susan B. Anthony, an abolitionist and Quaker, are immeasurable. She was an American civil rights leader who fought for the rights of the enslaved African Americans and of women who had no rights. Without her, there would have been no womenβs movement.
