At last the veil of fog has lifted from the valley!!
A European stonechat perched on a bramble stem, surrounded by fresh green leaves with reddish edges. The small bird has a warm orange chest, mottled brown back, and a pale wing patch. Its beak is stuffed with a messy bundle of dry grass, moss, and fine roots—nest material so large it partly hides its face—suggesting it is busy building or lining a nest. ‘What to Look for in Winter, 1959’
Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis) emerge as one of the earliest spring flowers, often pushing through late winter snow.
