A Boomer in my city opposes the protected bicycle lane because he can't consistently keep his vehicle in the 10ft wide vehicle lane. Driving over cyclists and pedestrians is not a reasonable accommodation. Also, when people say aloud that they can't safely operate a car, take their car.

That proposal is for a 1.2kW standard. That's great. I have no objection to that. That would absolutely require a larger cross sectional area of the connector. I see absolutely no reason mfr should have waited or should wait and not use USB-C in the interim.
USB-C is fine for 240W charging. As long as we're lower power than that, making the connector bigger isn't really helping anything. We just need more hugged housings, which manufacturers could adopt without stumbling over the standard.
