I realized at that point that to the mice, it went like this:

“Hey, there’s free chocolate in there, and after you eat it, in the morning they make you a car!”

At some point there were about 50 of these little cars and trucks displayed. A customer asked me why there were so many, and I delicately tried to explain it to him.

So I’d throw out the chocolate, but the toy inside was fine. I’d build it, and after a while we had a pretty cute collection of these toys on the counter in a little display.

My usual morning routine was to come in an hour before open, do the deposit, straighten up, get ready for customers.

At least 3 times a week I’d find a kinder egg half eaten in the display. Thin foil is not a great mouse deterrent.

The store was in an old building, and there were restaurants on either side of us.

This means we had mice.

So, here’s a fun story about those eggs. I worked in a video store (this should indicate the age of this story). We sold these off the counter by the cash. Toys varied, but generally were little model cars or trucks. The chocolate was wrapped in thin foil for sale.

Both of my parents always worked, until illness forced my dad into early retirement at 50. My mother supported him after that. Her mother worked, and in fact was the primary economic force in their household, her father was a hanger on who made some lucky investments.
