While the EU requires advanced treatment of urban wastewater, the UK has no legal obligation to monitor microplastics or antimicrobial residues.

If others have better protections, we should follow them.

It really is something to see politicians, commentators and media outlets whose whole identity is based on being so-called โ€˜patriotsโ€™ frothing with excitement as they line up to back a deranged megalomaniac who consistently attempts to belittle and bully the country they claim to love

The playbook is always the same: control women, protect power.

This International Womenโ€™s Day, we want a system that actually protects us. Weโ€™re fighting back for Nina, for Liv, and for every woman the courts have silenced.

Agapanthus stalks and โ€œskeletonsโ€ against a blue sky.

Before you cut everything back to make the garden look โ€œneatโ€ โ€” pause.
Right now in Ireland and the UK, many insects are still overwintering inside last yearโ€™s hollow stems.
Most donโ€™t emerge until temps are regularly above ~10โ€“12ยฐC (often late Marchโ€“April).

โ€œTidyโ€ can mean destroying shelter. ๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฆ‹

โ€œLegitimate concernsโ€ has become a euphemism for endorsing racism and a cynical attempt by governments to hide from their own responsibility and failure.
It is the slogan of cowards.
The excuse for bigots.
And it blocks our path to an honest national debate on immigration. Shame on all who use it.

I guess Starmerโ€™s not interested in getting back into the human rights game again, then.

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nationโ€™s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.

We mustnโ€™t let this war do so.

Speaking to the Guardian on the day before the byelection result, Mahmood urged her colleagues to acknowledge that the UK public had โ€œlegitimate grievancesโ€ about the unfairness of allowing people to arrive in small boats and the strain on public services from excessive immigration.

Compare and contrast Starmer calling Green's "extremists", "divisive" and "sectarian" with Mahmood repeating false Reform claims about "legitimate concerns" and "strain on public services". It isn't a choice between Reform and Labour when end result is the same.

City council wants power to introduce rent controls COUNCILLORS want the power to introduce rent controls to tackle โ€œspiralling housing costsโ€ in the city.

The spiralling cost of rent is causing real hardship and risks pushing people out of our city, so it was great to see the motion from councillor @alexmace.bsky.social pass at this weekโ€™s full council meeting.

Labour doesn't have the cover of claiming their hostile policies are "what the public want" now. All they have is just straight up admitting that they want to push hostile, dehumanising, policies which harm marginalised community and undermine the country. It's a choice they have made. 2/

Keir Starmer's attempt to paint the Greens as extremists yet again reveals his intolerance of political difference. His instincts are illiberal and authoritarian.

So pleased that Hannah Spencer won the Gorton and Denton by-election; but blimey, the reactions from Reform and Labour have been quite something to behold. Islamophobia from the former and ugly mud-slinging from the latter.

The U.S. spent $30 billion to ditch textbooks for laptops and tablets: The result is the first generation less cognitively capable than their parents | Fortune Neuroscientist Jared Cooney Horvath said older generations โ€œscrewed upโ€ giving students access to so much technology: โ€œI genuinely hope Gen Z quickly figures that out and gets mad.โ€

Surprise!! Ditching books for laptops has made schoolchildren, despite having access to more information, "less cognitively capable" than their parents. A massive experiment on young brains has gone catastrophically wrong.

Does Nigel Farage have a problem with women? Critics link Farageโ€™s โ€˜Trump-liteโ€™ condescension to female journalists to Reformโ€™s moves against womenโ€™s rights

Farage โ€œwants to distract people into thinking their problems are because of women or equality and diversity policies, or immigrants. Like Trump, it shifts the discourse and thatโ€™s v dangerousโ€

A government enthralled to men and corporations drunk on power is the rot at the centre of the Mandelson scandal.

Of all seven of the Nolan principles, openness can help build back the most trust.

Every MP, like me, should release logs of all lobbying meetings.
