“How did you get all the youth groups in two counties together to do outreach?” Idk Janet, I offered them pizza and sugar and signed off on their volunteer hour sheets in exchange for them to come help fix up a daycare center or a homeless shelter or make care boxes for deployed soldiers.

Upon reflection, I was the kind of Christian most churches don’t actually want. I didn’t sit at tables Jesus would have flipped and that made me more of a threat than anything.

(Unrelated/related: Same summer I got bit by a gator at this camp too. If I had just quit I probably wouldn’t have so many funny stories. )

By that point I was still slightly in the closet (and, bonus, all my same sex experiences happened at this camp with other counselors those two summers) so it was a bitter irony they wanted me to take a scholarship to become a pastor while I, by policy, wouldn’t actually be allowed to be a pastor.

The Final snap was when they reversed their policies allowing LGBTQIA2s+ to serve as lay persons (the highest they could be at the time) midway through the second summer. If the camp director didn’t beg me (we were understaffed and barely above counselor:kid ratio) I would have quit two weeks in.

I ended up being a camp counselor at the church associated camp for two years after bc the overall church org wanted me to rethink abandoning the scholarship since I was their little weird prodigy with success rates of growing youth groups and collab with other groups in the same denomination.

The wildest part was none of the youth group had a problem, the church as an entire org didn’t either, just the new youth leader who decided I was a bad influence and lied. The admin council who knew me since I was 6 sided with her.

I was a fill in youth pastor my senior year of hs. I invited my gay bff to an overnight lock in. The youth pastor they hired complained to the admin council and they “fired me” three months early. I left the physical church that week and abandoned a full ride scholarship to seminary school.
