If you're a scientist, now's the time to speak up. Our deep-sea ecosystems are at risk.

Sign the letter: "Scientists Call for Full Implementation of Existing Commitments to Protect Deep-Sea Biodiversity."

The framework to protect seamounts exists; what’s needed now is political will to finish the job.

At #UNOC3, it’s time to turn commitments into action. We ask States to prioritise ocean health and put an end to destructive deep-sea bottom trawling on seamounts. #OceanLifelines

'Attenborough would be mortified': Six tonnes ofΒ coral bycatch off Christchurch Experts said incidents involving such a large amount of coral being caught are rare.

πŸͺΈ heartbreaking 6 tonne bycatch πŸͺΈ If you were shocked by bottom trawling in Sir David Attenborough’s film Ocean, you’ll be appalled by the devastation from bottom trawling in New Zealand. www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/bottom-tr...

Life Below Water Goes Deep: Our Planet’s Greatest Untold Story NICE, France, Jun 02 (IPS) - As David Attenborough reflects in his new documentary Ocean, β€œAfter living for nearly 100 years on this planet, I now understand the most important place on Earth is not…

The health of our ocean and our existence depend on choosing wisely: either protecting the deep sea or leaving it to exploitation.

Ahead of #UNOC3, @divaamon.bsky.social and @seamounty.bsky.social urge governments to protect the planet’s most mysterious and vital frontier.

This #DeepDay, we must turn science & traditional knowledge that help us understand the #DeepSea into action.

Ending bottom trawling on #seamounts is 1️⃣ of the clearest actions governments can take to breathe life back into our ocean. bit.ly/44po3Aj

”They say the myth of "neutrality in science" is actually harming the reputation of science right when we need it most”

Could not agree more!

Sweden sets an example for EU countries with first steps to ban bottom trawling in marine protected areas Swedish government proposal to amend legislation, paving the way for a future ban on bottom trawling in Swedish marine protected areas.

Bottom trawling, dragging a heavy net across the seafloor, has been compared to burning down a forest to catch rabbits.

Sweden starting to ban this in sensitive habitats is my #EarthOptimism #OceanOptimism for today.

(I’m not anti-trawl but there are some places we shouldn’t do it)

Artist rendition of the zonation of target seamount. In the style of Alexander Von Humboldt and Alexander Keith Johnston, the science party partnered with an artist to make this scientifically accurate artistic rendition of life along the flanks of the seamount. Each panel depicts a flank of the seamount. Each icon represents 50 individuals per 125 m of depth except for the three genera with a black box, which represent 100 individuals. Icons represent different taxa, including sponges, corals, and other sessile organisms that live on seamounts. It's beautiful. Artist: Constance Sartor, Β© 2023 CRS. Used by Permission.

New paper just dropped, with beautiful artwork showing the biological zonation of a seamount in the equatorial Pacific 🌊

Our new article out in Science Advances today! 🌊 In Europe we have protected 1% of our deep-sea biodiversity from bottom-contact fishing, but our analysis revealed that 3,500 hours of fishing still occurred within these protected areas. www.science.org/doi/full/10....
