I don’t know what’s worse: AI impersonating writers and editors and stealing the value they use to pay rent or people being casually dismissive of said writers and editors for being upset about that

'Teaching-only staff at Sheffield Hallam University are set to be moved into a subsidiary firm, leaving research intensive scholars the only academics still being employed directly by the institution.'
Utterly inequitable & betrays a fundamental misunderstanding of the teaching/research nexus. 1/3

Nice to see this piece tackle the conceptual slippage between #Neurodiversity and #Neurodivergence

NEW: Is this the broligarchy’s first world war? AI, like war & rape, is a hyper-masculine fantasy of God-like power, a myth at the dark heart of what we’re seeing play out in the Gulf. This war hasn’t replaced the Epstein scandal. It is the Epstein scandal.

Asking students to declare #LLM usage in no way mitigates the #plagiarism that arises from the use of such technologies.
We would not accept a declaration of collusion in defence of #AcademicMisconduct ... yet that is the equivalent act here.
#HigherEducation
Have said before but worth repeating...
Allowing students to use #LLMs to produce work or imagery for assessments will be in breach of most #University #plagiarism policies.
Vicarious plagiarism is still plagiarism.
Having mixed messages on this does #students no favours.

This is where we see the interplay between structural, institutional, and interpersonal forms of #racism producing such outcomes in #policing
Who looks like they belong in certain areas and how those who don't are interpreted as suspicious, and thus a threat worthy of #police attention

This is how Cory Doctorow defines “enshittification.” Where do you see it nowadays? Where do you think it’ll pop up in the near future?
My #HigherEducation hot take today:
#Teaching quality, #GrantCapture, and #ResearchEfficacy are all inversley proportional to the degree of #AdministrativeBurden an #academic is exposed to.
Contemporary #HEIs have, to their detriment, all sacrificed the former on the altar of the latter.
Aye. We're going through a "transformation" project that's ill considered, unevidenced, not really budgeted or risk assessed, clearly ideological, and, given proposed cuts to staff and programmes, not really designed to achieve the stated aims!
Would be interesting to see expansion of core administrative staff for all universities over last 15yrs that have made significant cuts to front line #academic staff!

When violence unfolds across multiple relationships and contexts, incident-based systems struggle to recognise how harms accumulate.

A helpful reminder that not all politicians are the same…
Some are more corrupt than others…
Farage comfortably ahead for private interest earnings this Parliament
There's a common misconception that zoonotic viruses require significant adaptation to jump from animals to cause human epidemics.
Not so 👇.
Further, we see clear signs of 1977 flu experiencing cell passage, prior to epidemic.
SARS-CoV-2? Business as usual.

Tis a foolish #criminologist who makes predictions but ...
I think that the US's #PetroWar on #Iran is going to result in the siding of the US and Israel with Russia over oil supplies (we have already seen a relaxing of sanctions re India) which will have awful consequences for #Ukraine

Well, this takes the biscuit.
I know of cases where people were named as authors without their permission, and where it's difficult to get anyone to do anything about it. But here we have a particularly brazen publisher who says they'll remove it if you pay $500!

#AcademicSky idea is to boost work of an #EarlyCareerResearcher in #SHAPE or #STEM Rules: 1. Give their name
2. Include details (if possible)
3. Detail article/book/presentation
4. Provide a link
5. State discipline with # (i.e. #Sociology)
6. Use # #ECRFriday
7. Repost all #ECRFriday posts!

Something I hinged on to get to this what I describe: the Marxian fetishisation of artefacts is so complete in the case of AI that not only do we somehow conclude machines think, but we accept for them to think, speak, draw instead of us, while also thinking these are (expressions of) our thoughts.
Quietly, calmly and forensically, BBC just dismantled the Trump communications shitshow on Iran.
No hyperbole, just laying out an unprecedented military, diplomatic and reputational shambles.
Worth a watch.

In this interview with the SCOTUS Blog, which launches its series on global apex courts, I reflect on the role of the UK Supreme Court and consider whether adjudication at this level in the UK is really as apolitical as we often assume it to be. www.scotusblog.com/2026/03/the-...
