Do I also think renting > owning a home/condo? You bet! From a financial point of view "investing" in real estate creates lots of perverse incentives. These aren't diametrically opposed positions. And I get why local entities use property taxes for good reasons.

I proudly support taxing income over property and think most Americans agree with that position. Taking money from my paycheck? Ehh. Taking money from me because I already bought a TV, a car or a house? That *feels* unfair.

If rich people are making lots of money tax it! We all agree on that!

The Islamic Republic of Iran is younger than the Rolling Stones. If you want to do that comparison, consider that Safavid Persia converted to Shia Islam around the same time English settlers founded Roanoke and then went through no fewer than six distinct ruling dynasties over the ensuing 500 years.

It’s crystal clear now that Trump has lost control of this war. He badly misjudged Iran’s ability to retaliate. The region is on fire.

1/ I’m going to explain to you in this🧡what I’ve learned - in part from closed door briefings - about the four biggest current crises.

And gain readers back again. They should have pivoted left in response to Trump 2.0 to gain clicks, advertisers and subscribers. They could have increased the subscription cost and the brand name alone would have supported it!

Here's the crazy thing: I assume all the comments are from people who (like me) still subscribe to the Post! Even after the sharp right turn the bulk of the WaPo subscribers - the true FANS - are mostly decent liberals.

It makes me hope that should another owner swoop in - the WaPo could undo this.

Someone in the comments brought up Galatians3:26 and... it is almost as if the conservative author doesn't know Christianity that well.

I thought they were silly when they rolled out but they have, ironically enough, restored my faith in the Washington Post readership who is still left.

AI summary of comments reads: The conversation explores the tension between traditional and progressive interpretations of Christianity, particularly in the context of political and social issues. Participants in this discussion express strong support for James Talarico's inclusive and compassionate approach to Christianity, contrasting it with what they perceive as the judgmental and exclusionary stance of conservative Christians. Many comments highlight the disconnect between the teachings of Jesus, which emphasize love and acceptance, and the political agendas that some associate with modern conservative Christianity. The discussion also touches on the perceived misuse of Christianity to justify political power and bigotry, with several commenters advocating for a return to the core values of compassion and understanding. Additionally, there is criticism of the focus on transgender issues as a political tool, with calls for acceptance and protection of marginalized communities. Overall, the comments reflect a desire for a more inclusive and loving interpretation of Christianity that aligns with the teachings of Jesus."

Oh yeah an awful awful piece. Having said that - despite everything Bezos has done to wreck the paper - the vast, vast majority of commenters are speaking truth to power and some are quite funny. The best part of the "AI Summary" is that it quickly shows most people hate these articles.

Agree that renting encourages mobility which has a lot of positive follow on effects. With condos and houses there are lots of reasons discouraging moving.

works for the resident inside. Does it have a lot of amenities? Are problems quickly resolved? Is it up to code? Ultimately - the business model with apartments seems to make this value judgment easier than with condos or houses.

One easy comparison might be to think of housing like healthcare/hospitals. No one wants a hospital that will "resell" at a higher value. The ultimate value of a hospital is how well patients are receiving care. The ultimate value of a house (or apartment, or condo) should be how well it

purchase your property. Even worse - you get the downsides of a mortgage + property taxes as well as an ongoing condo HOA fee that you'll never "pay off" no matter how long you live there - and that often increases each year. Something breaks? You have to fix it. Need to move to another
