I once tried something like this in a game I ran, but it unknowingly sent enemies to a pocket dimension. When the foes finally escaped, angry and united, chaos ensued, but it was glorious.

You could have a party travelling with Frieren in the present and hearing one of her stories of the past each time they come to a place, person or monster that reminds her of an episode in the past.
Now I just have to iron out a few details...
It's a story game about sharing memories, as players go around in the circle to draw pre-written prompts created by the group for this game and then build improvised memories from the prompts.
The base setting for the game is a therapy session for amnesiacs, but it would easily be adaptable.
Each episode is basically about them taking a journey that retraces the footsteps Frieren once took 80 years ago with the Hero's Party.
Now, how do you put that experience into an RPG? Well, I've realised that one of my favourite RPGs is perfect for the job: A Penny for Your Thoughts.
30 years ago, the human champion of the party passed away, leaving Frieren to realise she had feelings for him and now it's too late to act upon them.
In the current day, Frieren travels with her apprentice Fern and young warrior Stark, who has a complex relationship with Fern.
So, I have been watching Frieren: Beyond Journey's End and wondering how to gamify it...

I am stilling my turmoil by reading the first "Game Changer" book by Rachel Reid and it so so cute! I wouldn't have had myself down as a romance fan, but this is really sweet and relatable, though I am having an issue with Scott Hunter being blond in the book! #LGBTQ #HeatedRivalry
This is an excellent analogy, because my recollection from grade school is that the pen on the right looks fun and exciting, and then you play with it for a few minutes and realize it's not actually useful for anything and in fact makes some tasks more cumbersome, and never think about it again.

They couldn't use "Game Changer" because that's already the name of a show on Dropout, a fact that is commemorated in episode 3 of Heated Rivalry, which adapts the first book, where a familiar loop-de-loop logo can be seen as a piece of wall art in the shop where Scott & Kip first meet! 2/2
