Happy International Day for #WomenInScience! I’m Lisa Kreye, a HelLO master’s student studying whether species traits can explain variability in birds’ responses to environmental change. Grateful for the mentorship of amazing women scientists like @jellybb.bsky.social and @laurabosco.bsky.social 🐦
Our new paper on Bateman gradients in black coucals and white-browed coucals is out. Females of both species outperform males in mating and reproductive success - confirming the generality of Bateman's principle when sex roles differ.

Another day of #AnimoveCR 😀 Analysing animal movement with continuous-time models by @ecoisilva.bsky.social and Chris Fleming, ending with a fantastic plenary talk by @kamransafi.bsky.social on Kruger National Park research.
Countdown for #AnimoveCR at La Selva Estación Biológica, Organization of Tropical Studies 👍
We will see you tomorrow!

Congrats!
Victoria’s riflebirds are masters of time, accelerating their dance tempo by reducing the durations between movements by just 50 milliseconds, before leveling off at 3 alternations per second and flashing their yellow mouth.

The diversity in plumage and behaviors of #ruffs is stunning and probably an underused asset for their #conservation @simonvandepitte.bsky.social #IWSG2025 #shorebirds #ornithology
Something to look for in #wader nests. Blue eggs are becoming increasingly common in #ruff clutches @jellybb.bsky.social #IWSG2025 #shorebirds #conservation
Interesting talk by @jellybb.bsky.social about the aberrant egg coloration in Ruff clutches. Blue eggs may affect nest survival, but fitness effects may be habitat dependent. @waderstudy.bsky.social IWSG Conference 2025 in Groningen (Netherlands) #IWSG2025 #waders #shorebirds
Belated but wonderful news: Kriszti Kupán has won a 3-year grant from the Bauer-Hollmann Stiftung for monitoring and developing an integrative #conservation management approach for threatened #ruffs and #dunlins at #Liminganlahti! 🥚🎉🐣

The first chapter of my thesis is out now in Journal of Ethology! Check it out if you're interested in taking a deep dive into the vibrational signal of a very cute spider 🕷️〰️

We're not really sure! Could be something from the environment? We noticed fluctuation between years/field sites in the occurrence of these blue/pale eggs which are the most odd ones..
Intraclutch egg color variation in #ruffs is striking. Pale to strongly pigmented, speckled and not speckeled and even blue eggs within a single clutch 💙
Adorable #ruff chicks for your Sunday evening. Or Monday morning.
It's always nice to have back a bird you ringed!
@wmgvs.bsky.social remember Ljudmila?
Sunday morning delight! Woodcock with her chicks feeding and brooding in front of our kitchen window.

Blonde ruff female standing in grasses by its nest.
Ruff clutch of four eggs, three eggs abnormally pale.
Yesterday, we found the nest of this blonde female. Three of her eggs were also exceptionally pale. #ornithology #waders
Ruff male with brownish ornaments co-display with pale-ruffed satellite morph. Female stands by them.
Ruff lekking: The co-display of a pale satellite and a court-defending independent morph increases male attractiveness. Lekking began here (65°N) in the first week of May and continues, even though most females are already incubating and the first chicks are expected to hatch any day now.
Yeah. Lapwings are quite contrasting, even in grass. But I know the struggle with plovers. Here in Finland they nest on former snow dumps and beaches too. Takes some serious pattern recognition to find them
Maybe a posted the one from a rather difficult angle 😁
Can you find all adorable #lapwing chicks on the photo? 🥰
A female Ruff enters her nest — a tent-like shelter hiding her precious eggs. She’s unringed for now, but she’ll receive her bands once the chicks hatch. #waders #ornithology

This year we spent long (and cold) nights out to capture #ruffs during peak #lekking. Each one ringed and fitted with a transmitter to help us track their movements and behavior.
Thanks to the team for the effort and stamina it takes to pull this off 💤

Ruff clutches are expertly hidden, the eggs are camouflaged and very difficult to find. But this year’s field crew with @jellybb.bsky.social @simonvandepitte.bsky.social @koivulakari.bsky.social @vmpakanen.bsky.social is on 🔥 and found already plenty of them.
