review of hell's heart by alexis hall
DNF @ 21%: This is all over the place, random women keep fingering her and I can't be bothered reading infodumps about whales. I'm literally so bored.
further proof that sometimes negative reviews sell books better than an algorithmic ad ever could

it's one of the most vulnerable stories about my own self and identity I've ever written, and it means a lot folks have resonated with it π

La Sirenaβs Blessing of Belonging
V.M.
I have a new short story out today!
"La Sirena's Blessing of Belonging" is about a girl making a wish to find where she belongs. It's a deeply personal piece about biracial identityβand also a contemporary (slightly futuristic) magical realism story rather than secondary world!
I hope you enjoy β¨

"After months of high-profile, militarized immigration raids in major American cities, the Trump administration has scaled back its deportation strategy, leading to a dip in arrests last month, according to three federal officials and internal government data.
In recent weeks, immigration agents have focused on conducting more targeted enforcement operations, rather than indiscriminate street sweeps, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal strategy.
Those arrests have been less visible and chaotic than the campaign that led to violent clashes with protesters β including the fatal shootings of two American citizens in January β and generated intense political blowback against President Trump.
The retreat from some of its most aggressive enforcement efforts underscores the challenges the administration faces in meeting its goal of deporting millions of undocumented immigrants."
Record ICE kidnapping and disappearing continue
The Trump regime's daily ICE snatchings are four times higher than they were a year ago. But the @nytimes.com says the regime has "scaled back its deportation strategy". This is like the "pause" in global warming, anyone remember that?

ICE abducted a US citizen when she came home from a trip to Turkey. Sundas "Sunny" Naqvi was born in Evanston, Illinois, and is being held in an ICE detention center.
ICE told her family they donβt know where she is. Her iPhone pings from within the ICE building. Protests are outside.

Strange Horizons co-ordinating editor and author of The Wall and The Horizon Gautam Bhatia spoke about what Iβd call a related issue β which I slotted in βnuanceβ β specifically, orientalism: βLiterary agents and editors based in the U.S. and the U.K. have certain assumptions of what Indian sf/fantasy should look like, and these assumptions flow from what they believe a U.S. and U.K.-driven market wants β which is essentially an orientalised and Bollywood-ised vision of India that flattens most of its complexity, and forces writers to write narrow, βidentifiably Indianβ themes. For example, which is the last space opera authored by an Indian writer to get published in the West? The last hard sf novel in the tradition of Banks or Tchaikovsky? These donβt exist.β
Thank you for doing this π (& I especially appreciated the attached bit)

Hegseth needs to stand trial after this as a war criminal. Between this attack and the girls' school, there's no ambiguity. He is responsible for mass murder and must be held accountable.

Bodycam video contradicts ICE claims in fatal shooting of U.S. citizen Ruben Ray Martinez in Texas
Video of last year's fatal shooting of Ruben Ray Martinez obtained by CBS News appears to contradict claims that Martinez was shot by an ICE agent because he "accelerated" and "intentionally ran over" another agent.
Video of the March 2025 fatal shooting of American citizen Ruben Ray Martinez obtained by CBS News appears to contradict claims by federal officials that Martinez was shot by an ICE agent because he "accelerated" and "intentionally ran over" another agent with his car.

Congress Is Considering Abolishing Your Right to Be Anonymous Online
The bipartisan push to remove anonymity from the internet is ushering in an era of unprecedented mass surveillance and censorship.
You should be able to criticize your government anonymously online.
Full stop.
"Age verification" legislation is just a pretty name for "forced online ID checks," meaning everything you post is associated with your government name
We have to stop this.

Firing Kristi Noem was a step in the right direction β and it only happened because we all stood up and spoke out to say enough is enough.
But cutting the leaves off a weed doesnβt pull out the root. She was just one piece of Trumpβs backwards immigration agenda.
Stephen Miller needs to go.

The painting "Night in the Steppe" shows a vast plain under a bright full moon, the light being distributed over the landscape and the water in an almost magical way.
This work is made by the renowned Ukrainian artist Ivan Marchuk, who invented the unique painting style called "plyontanism" (from the Ukrainian word plyontaty, meaning "to braid"). This technique consists of hundreds of fine, intertwined lines that create depth and an almost textile-like texture.
