Fingers crossed for that one too! And my heart also breaks for program and grants management staff. It’s gotta be stressful to have such a backlog. Meanwhile cutting edge new alcohol science is on hold.

As a largely NIAAA funded center director, I will echo the ugh ugh ugh of NIAAA not funding any new grants in 2026. We are waiting on an NIAAA F31 that received a perfect score(!) in the June/July review. And three other grants, but the unfunded F31 training grant is the real knife in the heart.

Agree its a skill and hard work! I worked hard as an Editor/AE to ensure papers were reviewed quickly. It requires checking the system often, being proactive. I also do a ton of reviewing: 30-40 papers per year. I feel its critical for advancing science, supporting others, and improving my own work.

What in the actual...??? So wild. I just received summary statements for a discussed grant in which one of the reviewers was clearly commenting on a different proposal and it was the worst score of the 3 reviewers. I have never heard of a non-score, but my point is everything seems to be a mess.
