1. As almost every research shows, young men have NOT turned to the right β€” compared to older men. In fact, they moved slightly to the left compared to older men.

Young WOMEN have turned to the left compared to older women.

Recent graph on Trump approval provides good example.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I feel like if a US exchange student in a foreign country (say, Turkey?) was imprisoned for six weeks because they wrote an op-ed in the student newspaper it would be a huge domestic story and an international incident.

"Masked security forces captured an opposition leader in the coastal province of New Jersey as regime officials continue their months-long crack-down against pro-democracy elements in the embattled United States. The arrest comes as the regime issued calls for summary detentions without trial."

Should We Vote in AuthoritarianΒ Elections? In the APSA Public Scholarship Program, graduate students in political science produce summaries of new research in the American Political Science Review. This piece, written by Ewa Nizalowska, covers the new article by Turkuler Isiksel and Thomas B. Pepinsky, "Voting in Authoritarian Elections." Elections are often taken as a defining feature of democratic regimes. Although voting is not the only form of democratic political engagement, we tend to presume that voting makes the regimes we live under fairer, more stable and peaceful, or simply better governed.

Should citizens vote in authoritarian elections? In a recent @apsrjournal article, Turkuler Isiksel and Thomas Pepinsky (@tompepinsky) make the case for the democratic value of voting under authoritarianism.

In Venezuela in 2009, Judge MarΓa Afiuni was imprisoned after ruling against government interests. This happened a decade into ChΓ‘vez's rule, after he had secured control of most institutions. Judicial targeting marked the final stage of democratic collapse.

A Code of Honor for a Dishonorable Age What a forgotten fraternity creed can teach us about leadership today.

In college, I saw the creed of my fraternity as just that, a creed, something to be recited to pass a test. But now I see it differently and read that words with a broken heart. How far we have strayed in our politics from "The True Gentleman" My latest

Universities Should Challenge Trump's Speech-Based Deportations of Students in Court [Updated] The Trump administration has been detaining and trying to deport immigrant and foreign students for their First-Amendment protected speech. That

@ucsandiego.bsky.social should follow the Tufts Fletcher faculty recommendation that universities join forces to file a class action suit against this administration.

ICMYI: reported protests in the US in 2025 are almost certainly outpacing protests during Trump 1.0. In March 2025, we recorded significant growth in the number of cumulative events, and also an uptick in the rate of events (# of protests/week).

Just looking at some data.
It will probably not surprise anybody that higher income inequality correlates to lower support for democracy.
But the relationship strengthened from 2010 to 2020.
Bottom line: if you care about renewing and strengthening democracy, pay workers more, pay executives less.
