What makes Saikat run? In his race to beat Nancy Pelosi in 2026, Saikat Chakrabarti’s friends and allies are calling him San Francisco’s Zohran Mamdani. Progressives are a bit more moderate on him

Saikat Chakrabarti wants to be the leftist successor to Nancy Pelosi. The media's even called him SF's Zohran Mamdani.

But some local progressives harbor deep suspicions of Chakrabarti's track record. Here's why:

What Rion wants most is connection. β€œI just want to be part of a community again,” he told us.

We’re organizing through a Signal chat to coordinate housing, resources, and job support: bit.ly/rionsupport

He’s an artist who spends his days carving walking sticks and coloring beautiful drawings. When I saw him recently, he said he was taking Atlas β€œback to his homeland,” where he found him. It was the sweetest thing. 🐾

Rion grew up in a military family and lived with his mother in East Oakland. When he was 48, his mother was murdered, a loss that sent him into deep grief and eventually onto the streets. Since then he’s endured incredible hardship, including a broken back and most recently a violent attack.

Help Rion rebuild his life πŸ’œ

Rion has lived in Oakland’s Peralta Hacienda neighborhood for years, always with his dog Baby and kitten Atlas by his side. Despite being unhoused for over a decade, he’s kind, gentle, and takes pride in keeping himself and his space clean. 🧡

Probably worth pointing out that the reason this meme image goes hard in imagining utopia is because there are no cars and tons of greenery

Huge thanks to everyone who came out for tonight’s serve and to Martin de Porres’s House of Hospitality for sharing their space. We served PB&Js, apples, carrots, and hot meals with salad. Fun fact: we’ve never missed a Friday share in the last 4 years. πŸ€

PSA: No Friday serves this month! Our space is hosting a shelter. We’re working on an alternate serve for March 7β€”stay tuned.

For other Fridays, we’ll cook 4–6 p.m. and serve guests. Can’t come by 4:30? Bring food at 6 or help clean. Out by 8.

Need a meal? Message us on Signalβ€”we’ll help.

I adore Food Not Bombs. I love all of them.

They fed me and gave me veggies when I was hungry.

And we are all welcome at my local F.N.B. regardless of financial or immigrant status or any other thing.

why do a swastika instead of, say, the three arrows? again, it desensitizes people, may confuse them of your intent or allow them to misrepresent it, and is triggering for victims of nazi persecution and their descendants.

Hard to think of a better criminal record β€œstain” than violence against a Nazi. The gesture is itself a call to violenceβ€”any violent reaction in return is by definition self-defense.

A group of people at a Food Not Bombs food share in the Quaker Meetinghouse of the San Francisco Society of Friends are serving food for themselves and others. The long table is filled with large bowls of salad, trays of mixed vegetables, and other dishes. Participants, all wearing masks (with their faces blurred for privacy), are using tongs to serve food into takeout containers. The background features a cozy room with framed pictures on the wall, books, and a green couch, creating a welcoming and communal atmosphere.

A group photo of about 17 people gathered in a room with a wall covered in posters and printed materials. The people are sitting and standing close together, making various hand gestures, including peace signs and small heart signs with their fingers. Their faces are blurred for anonymity. The setting is a casual community space, the Quaker SF Society of Friend’s Meetinghouse, with a couch, a table with food items, and a wooden cabinet in the background.

The top panel contains the text, β€œHey friend listen, I know the world is scary right now but,” and the bottom panel zooms in on the soldier’s face with the continuation of the text, β€œthe future is unknowable and will be determined by how hard we fight now for a loving world.” The meme conveys a hopeful message despite the grim, apocalyptic imagery.

I feel so sick. Enough with the lies, enough with the games. They know exactly what they're doing.

This is a neo-Nazi movement. Proudly so. The only reason they've kept it coded up until now was to take advantage of those who didn't want to believe it.

No more looking away. Face up to what it is.

THE THREE PRINCIPLES OF FOOD NOT BOMBS

ONE - ALWAYS VEGAN OR VEGETARIAN AND FREE TO EVERYONE
Our food is vegan or vegetarian and free to anyone without restriction, rich or poor, stoned or sober. First, the potential for problems with food spoilage are greatly reduced when dealing strictly with plant based foods. Second, we want our food to reflect our dedication to nonviolence and that included violence against all beings including animals. We only prepare food which is strictly from plant sources so people will always know and trust Food Not Bombs that our food is safe and nonviolent. At times, we do get donations of dairy and meat products which might and redirect it to soup kitchens that aren't vegetarian because we believe eating is more important than being politically pure; however, we NEVER cook with animal products ourselves and only share breads that might have dairy when it is not possible to know for sure.

TWO - EACH CHAPTER IS INDEPENDENT AND AUTONOMOUS AND MAKES DECISIONS USING THE CONSENSUS PROCESS
Each Food Not Bombs chapter is autonomous and uses a process of consensus to make decisions. There are no leaders, presidents or directors, and no headquarters. Everyone in each chapter is encouraged to participate in the decision making including those who depend on Food Not Bombs for their meals. Your chapter may meet once a week or once a month but no one volunteer is empowered to tell the rest of the group how it is to operate and there is no headquarters to direct the activities of any chapter. The process of consensus is not voting or the use of "Robert's Rules of Order" where a majority determine the decisions. In consensus a decisions is not made until the proposal is one that everyone participating supports and can feel good giving their consent. There are a number of resources to help your chapter learn to use consensus on the web and you can also request support from volunteers who have been active in other Food Not Bombs groups.
