so my pushback is that: if you know where the break happens, then a media/container query is the clearest way to write it.
but changes that happen at unpredictable size, depending on content - those are the ones where flex or auto-grids work better.
hope that makes sense!
totally fair points. i don't recommend global breakpoints based on "common" screens either. I think it's a good critique of a real issue.
But any responsive element is changing at some point. If you know the screen/container size where that change should happen⦠to me thats a breakpoint
View transitions, anchor positioning, β@scope, focusgroup, invokers, popovers, container queries, grid, relative colors, style-able selects, and more.
The web feels like itβs getting so good at exactly the moment our collective worst practices are getting calcified as the default.
oh i didn't say without breakpoints, tho that depends on the layout with grids, which do support auto-fit and auto-fill.
But mostly I disagree that breakpoints are bad/harder. Or that hiding the breakpoint inside a flex calc counts as "without" them. it all depends on the goal.
yeah it's my only real disagreement with their approach. π π€·π»ββοΈ I prefer grid often for the same reason: easier to make it responsive. but the reality is that flex/grid have different mental models. one is inside out, the other outside in. I think it's best to match the logic of the layout in question.
so at this point it's rigged, if you think about it! π
Happy birthday! I hope it's a lovely one.
most studios around here teach beginner classes, in either wheel throwing or hand building. both are fun, depending the sort of thing you enjoy. Search for classes in your area!
In Denver it's also available through the rec centers.
lol i always think i look angry, sucking in my cheeks when i focus. but i'll take badass instead! (thanks!)
do you do pottery?
Grid for one column layouts is something I preach all the time frontendmasters.com/blog/super-s...
happy birthday!
just noticed this is a subtly recursive shot, and that makes me happy
done trans, am crimes af
#pottery trimming from last week
yes to only the last question
i'm excited to see yours!
is all the filming done, or just the first rounds?
that's true, but honestly I wasn't even thinking at that level of complexity. 1d grids are great! just stacking the parts, and then (nested) arranging the buttons - grid works as well as flexbox. and in place of positioning too!
and for the outer stack, it's already vertical by default.
writes css, doesn't always *get* css.
big focus on how the pieces fit together, to think about it as a system instead of a grab bag of random stuff to try and see what works.
yep! finishing up the first module. it's on my mind :)
looking forward to it!
haha yeah totally, i expect i would be the same. but i may be in a unique position where grid is the one i know better and would reach for on instinct more often.
Would you hate a country that dropped a bomb on your child's school? π€ Asking for a friend!
lol same, and this would happen to me for sure.
Gotta remember the only keyboard i'm fast on is the laptop built-in
yeah flex was especially a close mental match with floats, while fixing the worst issues - so people stopped there.
a 3d fever dream
it was a fun watch, nice work.
did you switch keyboards mid stream? i'm such a mid typer, as soon as i imagined doing it i was like "oh shit what if i use the wrong keyboard" lol
same and same, classic
i learned the fibonacci sequence from a parrot in one episode.
