Travel cases are less risky for public health than locally acquired cases. Assuming residents cooperate with health officials, outbreaks can be prevented. Unfortunately we know that cooperation cannot be assumed.

I can recall a time when many shunned expert recommendations with real consequences.

While the president was presenting the “updated” guidance from the FDA to the public, the head of the FDA made an appeal to his peers in the medical community that is much to the contrary…basically saying “Tylenol is safe in pregnancy and there’s no new evidence to change that.”

Our relatively high measles vaccine rates locally in Monroe County make local spread an unlikely way for measles to emerge here. Travel is a far more likely mode of transmission. Vaccination remains the most effective tool to prevent measles morbidity and mortality.
