I love the idea that *this* US government, which has been nabbing landscapers and five year olds knows where Iranian sleeper cells are but just hasn’t gotten around to doing anything about it yet.

What undermines direct action, besides fear foremost, is (1) cynicism - this won't do anything & (2) system justification - "the pendulum will swing back" "things will right themselves"

As real world wins against authoritarianism (abroad & our own history) show, it nearly always requires sustained non-violent collective action - in other words, we need people to alter their behavior & that comes of them believing conditions are altered & won't right themselves via usual means.

In our extensive research on activation - who is activated (beyond voting), activatable, repulsed by regime but won't do direct action - a critical dimension is NOT mere disapproval but whether they view regime as break in normalcy vs just a bad regular right wing gov't in a democracy.

In competitive authoritarianism (US right now) there's often a "loyal opposition" that's essential to the regime. They are so wedded to "decorum," they go along with rites & rituals that help regime prop up veneer of normalcy, undermining clear view of regimes actions & aims.

Grief is the negative space that love leaves in its wake. The greater the love, the deeper the grief. I moved back to Brazil after finishing university take care for my grandmother. She passed away, sitting down in her garden while we were talking shit about her neighbors.

The problem is, everyone I’ve spoken to in MAGAworld content creation — comms staff, influencers, whomever — knows their identity. In off-the-record conversations, people will simply tell me their name as soon as I ask the question, as they’re familiar with the memelord’s style from interactions in the disappearing MAGA group chats. (I do have to pause for a second and acknowledge that the meme zoomers have better opsec than the senior officials who did Signalgate a year ago.) But the moment I ask if they’d be willing to go on background about it — surely they aren’t Nazis, and shouldn’t they call out behavior in their own ranks? — sources immediately clam up. If I prod, they’ll shrug it off as everyone’s just having fun.
