The fact that Donald Trump is going to try to subvert the 2026 elections doesn't mean he will be successful. We have shown before that we can fight back in court and win. The key is that we must educate everyone about what is going to happen and what they can do as well to defend democracy.

Nobody in this Administration can agree on why they started this war or when it will end. The Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and the President are all saying different things. Servicemembers’ lives are on the line, and they deserve better than this.

Oh hey that thing we were all afraid of happening. Well it fucking happened. If you haven’t already locked down your credit/identity, you should fucking do it now. I’ll put the thread I wrote on how to do that (ish, there are Reddit boards with a million more steps you can take) in the comments. 🀬🀬🀬

I'm kinda fond of brittle stars and they don't get much press. This is one of the larger more active species. Ophioderma panamense, the Panama Serpent Star. Found on rocky reefs from S. Cal to Ecuador. It has no trouble navigating some red urchins. Lots of tube feet coming out of the urchin below it

Turtle Tracks! These may seem like tire tracks, but they are, in fact, the tracks of a green sea turtle hauling out onto the beach to bask in the sun!

A Common Octopus (Octopus vulgaris) clinging to the side of a rock, with various sea plants around. The octopus is staring at the photographer while inking. Its orange siphon is visible on the right, and a large column of brown ink is shooting out like a geyser. The octopus has a whitish colour, with slight reddish eyes and suckers. It has its papillae raised, giving it a bumpy appearance with some much taller bumps (almost spiky, but still rounded and fleshy).

Latest Manatee Update from Blue Spring!
The river temp was up to 75.7F (24.3C) and no manatees were in the spring run.
A little cool dip is predicted for early next week but questionable if that will bring any manatees back.

Here is a pic of two juvenile manatees from last week!

Mining without rules: The risky US bet on the deep sea Bottom lines up front In April 2025, President Donald Trump issued an executive order permitting deep-sea mining in international waters. This is contrary to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, and might mean that the United States has violated customary international law. The executive order raises questions regarding the legal status of any mining that might take place under US license, particularly whether insurers and companies based outside the US would be willing to participate. The increasingly tense geopolitical landscape has brought into sharp relief Western dependence on rare earth minerals. The minerals exist in minuscule concentrations (hence the β€œrare” label) in rock around the world, but where the rare earths are found is less important than how they are processed. Because the processing is cumbersome and extremely polluting, Western countries have long been reluctant to permit large-scale processing, which has instead become the domain of Chinese companies. That has resulted in rare earths overwhelmingly being processed in China: As of 2025, some 90 percent of rare earths are processed there. Western governments have long tolerated this situation, even though it involved minerals crucial to the functioning of modern societies, because they believed in the rules...

Desire for these small rocks on the ocean floor is triggering a 'deep sea gold rush' Negative consequences of deep ocean mining activity are no longer found only on the seafloor. This controversial practice has now become a midwater problem as well, with potential impacts reaching hundreds of feet above the ocean floor in every part of the world. A new study is the first to show that waste discharged from mining ships into the midwater β€œtwilight zone” of the Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) could disrupt food webs hundreds of feet above the seabed. Researchers from the University of HawaiΚ»i at Mānoa found that more than half of the zooplankton and roughly 60 percent of the micronekton living between about 650 to 4,900 feet (200 to 1,500 meters) would be exposed to mining plumes. Because these animals feed larger predators, the effects would ripple upward to fish, seabirds, and marine mammals. Ocean mining plumes replace nutrients During deep-sea mining, sediment, seawater, and pulverized nodule fragments are pumped to a surface vessel. Nodules are separated, and the waste slurry is returned to the ocean. Some operators have proposed releasing this waste in midwater to avoid smothering the seafloor. The new work suggests that choice could backfire. By sampling during a 2022 mining trial in the CCZ, the team...

NC fishing lawsuit decision could change industry A lawsuit filed by the Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina alleges the state has failed to properly manage its fisheries. The case highlights the long-standing conflict between the state's commercial and recreational fishing industries. A judge's decision, expected in several months, could significantly reshape North Carolina's fishing regulations. Closing arguments have been made in a case in Raleigh that could help determine the future direction of how North Carolina manages its fisheries. But it still could be several months before the Wake County Superior Court judge makes a decision. The Coastal Conservation Association of North Carolina is suing the state alleging that it hasn't effectively maintained its fisheries, which are considered a natural resource to be managed for the benefit of all North Carolinians. After several court wins for the association against moves by the state to dismiss the case, which was filed in 2020, the trial began Jan. 20. Both the state constitution and the 1997 Fisheries Reform Act bound North Carolina to rebuild any fishing stocks that get depleted, which has led the state to get involved in managing several commercially and recreationally important species, including flounder, shrimp, blue crab and striped bass. Fishermen on both sides...
