As Electricity Bills Rise, Activists Are Demanding Public Control of Utilities
βPublic powerβ organizers are pushing for democratized control and truly public ownership of our energy system.
"Public power is a way to actually improve the lives of working-class people. Electric bills are absurd. People are racking up debt... Weβre reaching a crisis point."
New @truthout.org roundtable w/ organizers from Tucson + DC on the rising left movement for public ownership of utilities.

This is the one Labor Day graph that tells you the actual problem in America.
The problem is not that America lacks abundance.
The problem is that a handful of oligarchs are hoarding Americaβs abundance.

We have a plan for Beltline Rail. What we need is elected leaders with the willpower to get it done, and the backbone to tell astroturfed anti-transit groups and Big Business β’ to buzz off when they lobby against whatβs best for Atlanta voters.

I first learned about isaac's work from lizzy oh and have been learning a lot about public power and climate-related work from their writings ever since. This latest piece, with its mix of personal narrative and helpful reference links, is a great way for those new to the topic to get into it.

This would unwisely retrace DSAβs steps at a pivotal moment in this country, a moment when DSA should be doubling down on mass campaigns and the structures that have succeeded at building them: GNDCC and our chapters across the country!

The 2025 amendment to GNDCCs CR03 cancels GNDCC, creates a new Ecosoc WG, for which it provides no democratic (or other) structure, and yet commits it to continuing the work GNDCC is already doing, without any strategy for how that will happen.

Our Report recounts why, in 2023, due to the closing of federal pathways, DSA passed B4P as a national priority to turn our organizing to local campaigns. That year DSA climate organizers in NY passed the ground-breaking NY Build Public Renewables Act, confirming the local pivot.

GNDCC then organized a national GND summit with over 60 DSA chapters, and national campaigns for the PRO Act and GND for Public Schools. DSA's 2021 Convention adopted the GND priority and merged the Ecosoc WG into GNDCC to concentrate our forces.

DSA's 2019 Convention adopted the Green New Deal, interpreted in the Ecosocialist Principles as the revolutionary transformation of our social order, as a terrain of struggle. It also created GNDCC to carry out class-struggle campaigns under rigorous strategic analysis.

DSAβs climate organizing started in 2017 with launch of the Ecosoc. Working Group at Convention. In the next 2 years, EWG steering and a membership the size of a medium chapter, concluded that mass, federal campaigning was needed to meet the scale and speed of the climate crisis.

POLITICO headline:
Mamdani backs clean energy buildouts, decarbonization efforts
Subhead:
NYC's presumptive Democratic mayoral nominee is poised to take on big energy transition challenges in the nation's largest metropolis
Photo: Zohran speaking at rally outside of New York Power Authority's NYC hearing on public renewables
βIβm running for mayor to make the city more affordable and to take on the existential crisis of our time β climate change,β Mamdani said during a March candidate forum on climate.
One of Mamdaniβs signature legislative priorities β although he wasnβt the prime sponsor of the bill β was pushing for the New York Power Authority to build out new renewable generation. Heβs one of only two lawmakers who actively participated in Con Edisonβs last rate case and recently slammed the utility for seeking another bill hike. Mamdani also opposed a new gas plant in his district that was blocked by Gov. Kathy Hochul and sponsored an unsuccessful measure to ban new fossil fuel power plants.
βAt a time when weβre certainly seeing Republicans, but even some Democrats, backing away from climate change and a kind of Green New Deal style politics, this is a huge rebuke to that,β said Daniel Goulden, the strategy co-chair of the New York City Democratic Socialists of Americaβs Ecosocialist Working Group.
βOur horizons have expanded exponentially β and Iβm really excited for the future for the first time, maybe, in my entire life,β they said.
Mamdaniβs most detailed clean energy proposal on the campaign trail was to renovate and decarbonize 500 schools, transform 500 schoolyards into green spaces, and create 50 resilience hubs at schools.
Mamdani supports the [Public Power NY] effort to get the power authority to move faster and build 15 gigawatts of renewables, including a third of that in the downstate region. The authority currently has plans to build 6 gigawatts, although many of those projects are in the early stages of vetting.
As mayor of New York City, Mamdani would have a significant platform to pressure the power authority and Gov. Kathy Hochul to do more to decarbonize the downstate grid. The regionβs electricity mix is currently 89 percent fossil fuels.
He could also promote additional solar and storage on city properties if he ascends to City Hall, although there is already a local law setting targets for solar on city facilities.
NYC's next mayor is an ecosocialist π±
From stopping new smokestacks in Astoria to winning public renewables and fighting Con Ed's rate hike, @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social has led the fight for a #GreenNewYork from Day 1.
