As a side note, all data on your personal server is publicly viewable via direct queries, since that’s the way the protocol was made

That’s why private accounts aren’t a thing yet. You basically have to fight against the design of the protocol to make them happen

The reason for this is data aggregation

If you reply to someone’s post, their post will not be on your personal server. The app has to go to *their* server to get the post you’re referencing

The app view has to centralize all this info so it’s not making a billion network calls all the time

As for stuff like moderation - even though bsky can’t touch posts that are hosted on your personal computer, they can block others from seeing them via their app view

It’s possible to make your own app view to bypass this, but this step is much more costly

Reminder that the AT protocol, aka the protocol bsky runs on, was meant to be decentralized. All of my posts I make here are stored on my personal server, not bsky’s

If I get the time, I’d like to make a tool that makes that transition easier
