Tariffs cause trade wars which then cause consumers to PAY MORE not less. Farmers had to receive subsidies taxpayers PAID. Americans' collective memory is notoriously disastrous. What we need to do is explain the basics over and over again until they sink in.

2019: imposed tariffs on $7.5 billion worth of EU goods.
