Substack is more like a community than you would think, even taking into account its own algorithmic way of thinking. You’ve got to jump in and engage with other writers, and the best way to do that is support each other on the platform, especially new writers.

How stories begin; someone writes them down, in this case my mother This and one other story were the clues to the family's journey to the West Coast of California my Mom wrote down. Someone in the family has them, but you'll have to keep asking until you find them.

Out with the old, in with the new: Writing nonfiction narratives about ancestors with drama, flair, grammar – even movies! Family history stories are really memoir – told by the people who knew them. Effective stories lead with a hook, set the stage, develop conflict, and resolve it with a punch line or epiphany.

Write a complete story in 55 words or less. That's what I tell writers who are just learning how to write a narrative. All it needs is a setting, character or characters, conflict, and a resolution.

The truth is, when you are working with at-risk students of any type, they have given up trying before they ever arrived in your class. In their experience, the more work they submitted, the worse their grade became because they were learning something new. Here's what to do next.

A cautionary school improvement tale, plus three strategies that paid off big The class size issue is polarizing, pitching elective/CTE classes against core requirements. Trying to address why students fail is a debate about grades vs. standardized tests. I've experienced both.

Your assignment, just for fun: Find a family photo, and write captions to go over each of the characters in your family story. Share it with family, friendsβ€”or here. It’s fascinating how effectively this becomes a fill-in-the-blanks writing prompt.

Pet parrots were taught to do video calls, and it was a hit.

The birds not only made friends with each other, and selected who they wanted to call and when, but also picked up new skills from fellow parrots.
Good enrichment option for improving captive parrot welfare.

Never learned this lesson, and I hope students Josh and Erin are still thinking outside of the box Growing up my mom always told me not to talk with my hands--even though I produced puppet shows and newspapers for the neighbor kids, and was an actor and journalist after that.

We were developing a shorter, leaner workshop that brought a team of people together to make decisions to take back to the staff. The principles and approach were wildly successful. If you want to create a change in your organization, this is the how to get started.
