The fact that the only way to meaningfully lower housing costs requires letting capitalists make a lot of money building expensive new homes kind of breaks a lot of people’s brains.

the last gasp of broadcast tv being the Sheldon Cooper Extended Universe is somehow extremely on point in some way I am too exasperated to enumerate at this time

β€œMultifamily housing is for young renters and the poor while single family homes are for established adults with children” is a really pernicious folk theory about how housing markets should work that I think is foundational to so much bad housing policy at all levels of government.

Just learn that a lot of fertilizer comes from the Persian Gulf and that is needed basically now for planting (cant just do it months later) so prices on that are spiking which means food prices are going to be stuck high next year.

The world is full of mentally unwell people or people with demised mental capacity due to age or even just people kinda prickly. I hope our top elected officials would have more grace to ignore it.
Sadly social media incentives elected punching down www.oregonlive.com/politics/202...

Man there was a time when a one day 7% increase in oil prices would be a full blown massive all consuming news story

Like none of this is true. Can just see the Dem ads. With each thing Trump says follows by doom music and big numbers showing the total inflation for that item

Many people defend paid for inclusionary zones as a way to make neighborhoods more economically diverse but they are just a really inefficient way to do that. Could use the same money to buy up/subsidize so older housing stock helping 2-4 times as money families.

I used to be relatively supportive of IZ (which made on the surface made more since during the build boom years) but as I look more at the data they are clearly a disaster.
Some cities try to fix it with "paid for" IZ but that is another disaster since it is a bad use of housing dollars.

democrats still seem to be laboring under the delusion that they can introduce stuff to pass while trump is president and they, not trump, will somehow get credit for it. they learned nothing from trump taking credit for covid stimulus checks

The writer of this piece bought a small farm just north of Iowa City with her professor husband & has never run the farm herself. The land wasn't farmed at all from 2017 to 2020 because they couldn't find a tenant.

There are a very limited number of countries to which we sell the Tomahawk missile, and Iran isn't among them.

It would probably be worse collectively if more countries had nukes (higher risk of major world disaster) but better for the individual countries (lower risk of being attacked)

Portland Leaders Mull Two New Fees to Fund Street Maintenance Amid an ongoing transportation funding crisis, a committee of the Portland City Council is mulling a $68 million funding package that would charge homeowners, renters and utility franchise companies a...

The repair fee makes perfect sense but moving away from charging large trucks and cars to pay for the roads they use instead towards using very regressive flat household transit tax is a very weird move for liberal #Portland www.wweek.com/news/city/20...

Automating away the worst jobs on earth is in fact good. The combine harvester (which automated 'combined' multiple previously horrible backbreak tasks) was one of the greatest developments in human history.

Keeping telling American "socialists" you can't build a high tax high service society if you have a low trust society where everyone thinks it is fine to break the rules and skim some off the top.

10.03.2026 00:18 πŸ‘ 70 πŸ” 10 πŸ’¬ 3 πŸ“Œ 0

If you get into a β€œwho can cut taxes more” battle with the GOP, you’re going to lose because they are far more shameless and antagonistic to the idea of living in a functioning society.

Don’t concede to their framing that taxes are nothing but a problem to be solved.

Trump: "You want to be president after me, Marco?"
Rubio: "Very much sir!"
Trump: "They are some very big shoes to fill."
Rubio: "I know"
Trump pulls out a large shoebox: "I need you to prove to me you can by putting on these very big shoes."
Rubio nervously puts on oversized shoes.

love how we killed the old, frail anti-nuke ayatollah just to have him replaced with his young, healthy son who wants nukes and who just had his father, mother, wife, and child murdered on the same day by his mortal enemy. surely this will bring peace to the region

Besides being bad policy the biggest problem with this is America has the stupidest definition of "income tax." It refers to only a small part of the taxes taken out of working people's income.
Voters would be really pissed if you ended their income tax and it had a tiny impact on their taxes.

We're in uncharted territory- if WTI crude holds these gains tomorrow- the current rise of 29.9% or $27.16/bbl would be its largest single day price jump- in both percent and amount- ever. Ever. EVER.

Probably a good time for Democrats to point out Trump has never once pumped his own gas in his whole life. He has almost no idea how much gas costs or how it impacts normal people's budgets.
