Historian of 17th century German religion and culture in the San Francisco area. I have a kid, a corgi and a garden. Posts mostly in English, occasionally in German or Spanish. All typos are due to the demon Titivillus, who has possessed my autocorrect.

Its also amazing when you cross "national" boundaries. I vividly remember a brief moment of terror when I picked up a piece of 17th c Italian paper in a pile of German records, thinking it was misfiled parchment. Nope, it's just that Italian paper was significantly finer than the German stuff.

Your regular reminder that the absurdly simplistic claim of "race scientists" that there are genetically determined racial differences in intelligence is about as "controversial" as the claims that the earth is flat, that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer, or that vaccines cause autism

Concern over US travel visas prompts Ig Nobels to move its awards to Europe Organizers of an annual satirical award for scientific achievement are shifting for the first time from the United States to Europe due to concerns about winners and others being able to get visas.

Having the Ig Nobels leave the US for safety reasons is a pretty on point example of the situation here apnews.com/article/ig-n...

The NorthEast Corner: Rediscovering the Final Resting Place of Concord's Black Community - Commonplace Ultimately, the search for Concord’s lost graves is not solely about stones and names; it is about restoring individuals to history, one clue at a time.

What kind of work goes into finding the final resting place of people without clearly marked graves? In a fascinating new piece for Commonplace, Beth van Duzer explores the search for the historic Black community's burial sites in Concord, Massachusetts. πŸ—ƒοΈπŸͺ¦

Amsterdam kitchens are tiny, partly because most Dutch food is made on the floor, using an axe, a cudgel and a spade, which is used to scoop the meal into the pan. The work surfaces are just big enough for two drinks, a bowl of peanuts and the New Testament.

Singing the news: the story of Italy’s last β€˜cantastorie’ – still performing in his 90s Famous for combining true crime and political scandals into songs – and antagonising Silvio Berlusconi – Franco Trincale keeps the tradition alive in his nursing home

Saw this headline and thought @unamcilvenna.bsky.social has made the news! Apparently not, but it's part of the same tradition.

My house had a whole hair salon in the basement when I bought it. Some of the older residents told me how my house used to be the center of neighborhood social life on Saturdays because the former owner did everyone's hair. (She passed in the 1990s)

Black-and-white newspaper page from the Leader-Telegram (Eau Claire, Wisconsin), dated Thursday, May 10, 1979. Large headline reads: β€œArea gas prices up, supplies down.” Photos show roadside gas price signs including a Holiday station displaying prices for regular and unleaded fuel and a CITGO self-serve sign listing gasoline prices around 73–77 cents per gallon.

Summary:
The article reports that gasoline prices are rising sharply while supplies to retailers are being reduced by oil companies. Retailers are receiving smaller fuel allocations and may have to close stations on certain days or shorten operating hours. Drivers are beginning to change behavior by driving less, taking shorter trips, or cutting unnecessary travel. Officials warn that the situation may worsen during the summer driving season as demand increases and supply remains tight.

Black-and-white newspaper page from The News Tribune, Friday, May 18, 1979, page 3. Headline reads: β€œGas Prices Rise Here; Supply Uncertain.” Byline: Mark Weinberg, News Tribune Staff Writer. The article reports that gas station managers are raising prices and facing reduced fuel allocations from major oil companies. The page includes a photograph of a man wearing protective clothing and goggles standing near industrial valves marked with a radiation warning sign. Caption identifies him as Jack Herbein, vice president of Metropolitan Edison Company, pausing by a valve at the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant.

Summary:
The article reports that fuel supplies are tightening and gas station owners expect allocations to shrink further, especially heading into Memorial Day weekend. Prices are rising as station operators receive less gasoline from suppliers but still face the same operating costs. Some stations are limiting hours or closing on weekends to stretch their remaining fuel. Gas prices in Florida and elsewhere are climbing rapidly compared with the previous year, and the outlook for supply stability remains uncertain.

Some of us remember the last time a revolution in Iran disrupted global oil markets. Prices soared. We waited in gas lines.
