Historian of 17th century German religion and culture in the San Francisco area. I have a kid, a corgi and a garden. Posts mostly in English, occasionally in German or Spanish. All typos are due to the demon Titivillus, who has possessed my autocorrect.

Delighted to share the news of an upcoming public event organised by Queen Mary University and German Historical Institute of London. This event celebrates the 30th anniversary of the publication of βCommunities of Violenceβ, by Prof David Nirenberg. This was a ground-breaking book that changed scholarly perspectives on religious violence and attitudes towards religious minorities in the late medieval and early modern periods. We are incredibly grateful to say that we will have Prof Nirenberg himself joining us and engaging in conversation with other scholars. They will discuss Prof Nirenbergβs work, its ongoing impact on the field, and the history of religious confrontations and religious persecution more broadly. We would like to warmly invite you all to join us for this event. It will take place on 14th April 2026, 5:30-7:30pm at the Art Workersβ Guild London. If you wish to attend, please register via the link provided. We look forward to welcoming as many of you as possible!

Going to have to consult the writings of Natalie Zemon Davis and Lyndal Roper again, like a monk returning to Holy Writ. ποΈ #earlymodern
In the days before LLMs, there was always the possibility of getting an interesting bad paper. Now it's just generic bullshit.

Eye twitches are so embarrassing. Like hey, look at me, I'm stressed and not sleeping or hydrating enough so my body is doing the cartoon shorthand for being close to the brink.
Yes, and the rest of us will suffer.

embrace the ideology of "fewer, better things"
The bright red critical word in this is "Schmittian", which is the core of this whole thing. Carl Schmitt, as much as any single person, laid the ideological foundations of Nazi political methodology and the ways that the right can subvert and capture liberal democracies. They're all nazis at heart.
Every day we stray further from the true path.

Its also amazing when you cross "national" boundaries. I vividly remember a brief moment of terror when I picked up a piece of 17th c Italian paper in a pile of German records, thinking it was misfiled parchment. Nope, it's just that Italian paper was significantly finer than the German stuff.
It's got me searching my surroundings for bricks, I tell ya what
Your regular reminder that the absurdly simplistic claim of "race scientists" that there are genetically determined racial differences in intelligence is about as "controversial" as the claims that the earth is flat, that smoking doesn't cause lung cancer, or that vaccines cause autism

Amsterdam kitchens are tiny, partly because most Dutch food is made on the floor, using an axe, a cudgel and a spade, which is used to scoop the meal into the pan. The work surfaces are just big enough for two drinks, a bowl of peanuts and the New Testament.
Saw this headline and thought @unamcilvenna.bsky.social has made the news! Apparently not, but it's part of the same tradition.
