The 3rd paper related to my PhD is out! 🥳
It's published in Applied Corpus Linguistics and I explore a new way of combining corpus linguistics and cartography to profile (forensic) authorship, drawing on geolocated social media data to uncover regional language patterns.

Making good use of my last week in Helsinki at the Kielitieteen Päivät. The CorCoDial panel is tomorrow at 10AM incl. @jwgrieve.bsky.social, Steven Coats, @veronikalaippala.bsky.social, @tosaja.bsky.social and Ilmari Ivaska.
hund / dog is my standard word to check, so that is definitely in there 😀 might have been the app being a bit slow.

There is a symposium on "Authorship and Individual Language Use" at RU Bochum in November. Eng & Ger accepted and deadline for 350 word abstracts is 30.05. I'll be giving a plenary (in German) as well!
More details here: staff.germanistik.rub.de/kolloquium-a...
A bit late, but maybe still interesting. If you'd like to check for any cat words in the top 20k words of the corpus, have a look here: danaroemling.shinyapps.io/shiny_mapping/ - "katze" (eng. cat) is definitely in there 😁
Thank you! Very excited about this! 😁
It’s open access. I recommend using the pdf (not the website) as you can then just copy+paste the code.
My paper with @bodowinter.bsky.social and @jwgrieve.bsky.social was published in the Journal of Linguistic Geography today. 🎉
It’s a tutorial on how to use R & ggplot2 to visualise linguistic map data.

How about creating a “starter pack” with people from the department? -> bsky.social/about/blog/0...
Definitely! 😅🇫🇮
Last conference and last talk of the year back in Joensuu @24drdhum.bsky.social - some more forensic linguistics before the winter break. ❄️
Thank you for having me! Always excited to tell people about the cool stuff that‘s happening in FL 😊
We had the launch for the new dialect atlas on Swiss German – a 5y project that's now come to an end 🌟 We're thankful to the @snsf-ch.bsky.social and @unibern.bsky.social. The atlas can be bought here vdf.ch/dialaktatlas... but is also available as a free PDF from www.dialektatlas.ch #openaccess
If you want to hear Lucia and me talk about the CorGeS, join us later today :)
Please note the trigger warning as we will be discussing suicide.

Hello fellow forensic linguists, I thought I'd create a little space for us all. I'm new here so let me know if I've not seen you and need adding ❤️

Here’s what the other talks were about: Antti talked about the initial turns by the police (what are you supposed to answer when they say “Police!”?..)
Helmi about the distinguishing features of texts written by human subjects and Gen Ai
And Dana about geolinguistic profiling using Finnish Twitter
Many thanks to Dana Roemling and Helmi Siiroinen for organising a panel on forensic linguistics in Finland. Although I can hardly claim to be a part of the body of Finnish language researchers, it was great to hear about what others do and to share a bit of international experience #AFinLa
We’re also missing @coocho.bsky.social here, who had to catch a train home.
This is us being very happy about the positive feedback for our forensic linguistics panel at #afinla2024.
We have some more plans for FL in Finland. And no, it’s not starting a metal band, even though we look like we had a panel dress code.
I’m in Tampere joining a criminology conference and telling people about forensic linguistics (in Finnish!) ☺️
Look for "Forensinen lingvistiikka Suomessa: Nykykehitys ja tulevaisuuden näkymät" in the program. Working languages Finnish and English and we hope to offer translations for Finnish.
Very excited to be co-hosting my first panel on forensic linguistics with Helmi Siiroinen at the autumn symposium of the Finnish Association for Applied Linguistics. We'll be joined by @anttikannisto.bsky.social and Daria Dayter @coocho.bsky.social. Looking forward to the discussions!
My article with @danaroemling.bsky.social is now available fully open access! Check it out for our thoughts on the difference between real law and pseudolaw and how to visualize the spatial distribution of features in corpus. #languageandlaw #pseudolaw #openaccess #forensiclinguistics
