Good question. 1990 feels like a good point.
Iβm part of the generation that had weekday and Sunday newspapers. Thatβs why appreciate the account that just post comics. π
I was still buying a newspaper to read at breakfast in the early 2000s but the choices were slim pickings.

Fackham Hall got several laughs out of me. I appreciate a decent parody film. The Tolkien running gags cracked me up.

I really liked him on Are You Being Served! It was one of those shows I never would have watched if it wasnβt for the fact that it was on PBS and that was one of the only stations I could get when I was a broke college student. Really got hooked on it. π

No. The only decent thing Victor does is NOT creating a bride for the creature. His reasons are all over the place, but at least he finally shows the foresight to consider potential consequences. Of course, thatβs something a better person would have thought about BEFORE doing it the first time. π

The thing thatβs interesting to me is that likes are the main metric of βsuccessβ for most people. I know itβs easier than commenting all the time, but I always appreciate actual comments more and I try to comment on other peopleβs posts when I can. I say this as a no/low likes getter.

John was great! Yeah itβs a solid film. I just donβt ever want to see it again because I saw it so much! I can hear the theme song in my head! π
Madonnaβs Whoβs That Girl was another film like that. Song stuck in my head for almost 40 years.

I donβt think any singular human could possess enough charm to save this film. I think thatβs true for all of his dud films.
I think that is the mistake studios are making. Adding glen powell to a bad script isnβt going to save it.

This image shows two characters standing indoors in a dimly lit workspace. On the right, Amy Adams leans forward slightly over a table, wearing a quilted green jacket. Her expression is focused and concerned, as if she is carefully analyzing something just out of frame. Her posture suggests curiosity and deep concentration.
Behind and to the left stands Jeremy Renner, wearing a gray T-shirt with his arms crossed. He watches the same off-screen point with a more guarded, skeptical expression. His stance is upright and reserved, contrasting with Adamsβ more engaged posture.
The scene visually captures why their pairing works well as a sci-fi partnership. Adamsβ character approaches the alien encounter with patience, empathy, and intellectual curiosity as a linguist trying to understand communication. Rennerβs character, a physicist, brings a more practical and analytical perspective. Their different personalities (her reflective, language-focused approach and his pragmatic, scientific mindset) create a balanced dynamic where each perspective helps the other interpret the unknown.
One thing we really liked in Arrival is the pairing of Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner.
Different personalities trying to understand something completely unknown together.
Itβs a great example of how partnerships in sci-fi can drive the story.
Reply with an image of your favorite sci-fi duo. π½π
