The image is a misty, atmospheric shot from Arrival. In the center of the frame is a large circular symbol made of inky black strokes that look like splattered ink forming a ring. The symbol appears suspended on a transparent surface as if it has just been written. Behind it, barely visible through the fog, stand two towering alien figures with long limbs. One of them appears to be generating the symbol, suggesting it is part of their written language.

I love that Arrival is an entire movie built around translating an alien language.

It reminds me of The Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man, where the big reveal hinges on translating an alien book.

What other good sci-fi stories hinge on decoding or translating something mysterious?

This reminds me of the time I was set to watch a film for an episode recording and thought it was free on streaming (based on IMDb info) but it wasn’t. πŸ˜‘ Had to rent it and it really annoyed me!

In our episode on Arrival, Keri @readingsalt.bsky.social mentioned how much she loves hearing "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter in films. Arrival uses it to great effect! Here's a video that focuses on the visuals of the film with the song in the background.

Good question. 1990 feels like a good point.

I’m part of the generation that had weekday and Sunday newspapers. That’s why appreciate the account that just post comics. πŸ˜„

I was still buying a newspaper to read at breakfast in the early 2000s but the choices were slim pickings.

Fackham Hall got several laughs out of me. I appreciate a decent parody film. The Tolkien running gags cracked me up.

Yeah, I don’t understand people who seem to love fighting with people on social media.

I really liked him on Are You Being Served! It was one of those shows I never would have watched if it wasn’t for the fact that it was on PBS and that was one of the only stations I could get when I was a broke college student. Really got hooked on it. 😊

No. The only decent thing Victor does is NOT creating a bride for the creature. His reasons are all over the place, but at least he finally shows the foresight to consider potential consequences. Of course, that’s something a better person would have thought about BEFORE doing it the first time. πŸ˜‘

Yeah, I totally get that. Bluesky’s engagement issue has been pretty interesting to follow. It was so bad before they enabled notifications. 😬

While I don’t think the hair color change was necessary, I do appreciate when I can easily tell characters apart in films.

The thing that’s interesting to me is that likes are the main metric of β€œsuccess” for most people. I know it’s easier than commenting all the time, but I always appreciate actual comments more and I try to comment on other people’s posts when I can. I say this as a no/low likes getter.

John was great! Yeah it’s a solid film. I just don’t ever want to see it again because I saw it so much! I can hear the theme song in my head! πŸ˜„
Madonna’s Who’s That Girl was another film like that. Song stuck in my head for almost 40 years.

I don’t think any singular human could possess enough charm to save this film. I think that’s true for all of his dud films.

I think that is the mistake studios are making. Adding glen powell to a bad script isn’t going to save it.
