The image is a black-and-white still from a scene in an office setting. A man holds open a dark book with a sheet of paper next to it. The paper clearly reads βTO SERVE MAN.β The bookβs cover shows a series of alien symbols on the cover and we understand it is the same title. The image comes from The Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man.
The image is a misty, atmospheric shot from Arrival. In the center of the frame is a large circular symbol made of inky black strokes that look like splattered ink forming a ring. The symbol appears suspended on a transparent surface as if it has just been written. Behind it, barely visible through the fog, stand two towering alien figures with long limbs. One of them appears to be generating the symbol, suggesting it is part of their written language.
I love that Arrival is an entire movie built around translating an alien language.
It reminds me of The Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man, where the big reveal hinges on translating an alien book.
What other good sci-fi stories hinge on decoding or translating something mysterious?

This reminds me of the time I was set to watch a film for an episode recording and thought it was free on streaming (based on IMDb info) but it wasnβt. π Had to rent it and it really annoyed me!

Visuals - Arrival (4K)
YouTube video by Cinema Visuals
In our episode on Arrival, Keri @readingsalt.bsky.social mentioned how much she loves hearing "On the Nature of Daylight" by Max Richter in films. Arrival uses it to great effect! Here's a video that focuses on the visuals of the film with the song in the background.

Good question. 1990 feels like a good point.
Iβm part of the generation that had weekday and Sunday newspapers. Thatβs why appreciate the account that just post comics. π
I was still buying a newspaper to read at breakfast in the early 2000s but the choices were slim pickings.

Fackham Hall got several laughs out of me. I appreciate a decent parody film. The Tolkien running gags cracked me up.

I really liked him on Are You Being Served! It was one of those shows I never would have watched if it wasnβt for the fact that it was on PBS and that was one of the only stations I could get when I was a broke college student. Really got hooked on it. π

No. The only decent thing Victor does is NOT creating a bride for the creature. His reasons are all over the place, but at least he finally shows the foresight to consider potential consequences. Of course, thatβs something a better person would have thought about BEFORE doing it the first time. π

The thing thatβs interesting to me is that likes are the main metric of βsuccessβ for most people. I know itβs easier than commenting all the time, but I always appreciate actual comments more and I try to comment on other peopleβs posts when I can. I say this as a no/low likes getter.

John was great! Yeah itβs a solid film. I just donβt ever want to see it again because I saw it so much! I can hear the theme song in my head! π
Madonnaβs Whoβs That Girl was another film like that. Song stuck in my head for almost 40 years.

I donβt think any singular human could possess enough charm to save this film. I think thatβs true for all of his dud films.
I think that is the mistake studios are making. Adding glen powell to a bad script isnβt going to save it.
