I've quite liked Adrian Goldsworthy's line for a lack of sources that he's used a few times in his new Athens and Sparta book, describing it as "a poverty of sources".

This was so much fun! @abbottkahler.bsky.social is one of my favourite authors, and it was a delight to chat to her again for a book that ranks at the top of my muttering WTF as I read list.

A brilliant, devastating response to Grammarly et al by @moryan.bsky.social that you really should read.
I love reading all the words that come from this "underpaid, deeply creative heart".
With a namedrop for @tealcartoons.bsky.social!
RAF CLUB - THE PR LINK
The RAF Club at 128 Piccadilly is well known to those serving, those who have served, and those associated with the RAF, but it has an interesting link to wartime PR.
Opening in January 1922 but with its roots firmly set back in January 1917, the club has
come through highs and lows over the decades. But historically within these walls something occurred that links it to our project. Who knows what this might be?
Answer at 2000 GMTβ¦
And the answer isβ¦
Founder of the PDU Sidney Cotton used the club as a remote office as he found his way into the necessary departments he needed to work with to get RAF reconnaissance to where it needed to be. In one meeting with then Vickers-Armstrong Assistant Test Pilot Alex Henshaw,
No, you're just late to the party, mate.
A savage, magnificent, virtuosic and unlikely to be surpassed evisceration of "Mummy's Favourite".

Cover of the catalogue of 'Jacob's Christmas Specialties, 1939'. The cover is textured cream card with orange and chocolate brown trim, and gold embossed text in a modernist style. In the top right corner is a gold embossed emblem featuring a mediaeval herald in a quartered tunic holding a trumpet in one hand, and in the other a tray of delicacies
Parents are currently working through a mass of material from deceased family on my mother's side. Loads of fascinating, historical stuff but my attention was caught by this lavish catalogue from 1939 for the Jacob's Christmas range

Well, it was fun while it lasted.
Alex Butterfield was Admin for the FAA after leaving the Nixon WH. He was forced out after the horrific Turkish Air crash near Paris that revealed a critical fault in the DC10. Butterfield pushed for changes at the FAA which did not go over well with DOT.
He was, for sure, a fascinating man.
I can't compete with this.
Bring it! π
Great book, the Arrow chapters are brilliant.
On International Women's Day (IWD), celebrating all female space explorers, including Helen Sharman and her bold, gutsy, and record breaking journey to the Mir Space Station in May 1991. We were lucky enough to talk to Helen in the July and September issues of "Odyssey" last year; a real privilege.
Me holding a square book called why space will freak you out. The cover makes space features like planets and galaxies look almost like a skeleton
Oh and I checked the post and I got this fun book by @mwatzke.bsky.social and Dr Kimberly Arkand!!
Jonathan Ruffle recorded the interviews used in Bomber, most of them are on his website.

#OTD in 1944, the 8th Air Force flew Mission 250 to the heart of Berlin for the first time.
One of the pilots was Dick Bushong of the 390th BG, and a couple of years ago, I asked him about the mission. I'm pleased to say that Dick is still with us and is approaching 103!
