For six weeks we have been overwhelmed with news reports (free advertising) of Blue Origin’s next space flight featuring celebrities like Katy Perry and Gayle King. We’ve seen very few journalists in these reports ask what the impact of this new tourism industry for the ultra-rich has on our environment?
While Blue Origin claims to only emit water vapour, Eloise Marais, an associate professor in physical geography at University College London told AP that Blue Origin does “produce other gases (water vapor and nitrogen oxides) that can harm the atmosphere”.
Billionaires like Elon Musk (SpaceX), Jeff Bezos (Blue Origin) and Richard Branson (Virgin Galactic) are turning the skies into their playpen, and we’re paying the price.
An 11-minute flight emits no fewer than 75 tonnes of carbon per passenger once indirect emissions are taken into account (and more likely, in the 250 - 1,000 tonnes range). At the other end of the distribution, about one billion individuals emit less than one tonne per person per year. - World Inequality Report
