This very straight news piece buried deep within the FT never uses words like corruption or insider dealing but every detail is quietly devastating. Why is the FT virtually alone in the UK media in covering this important story?

Farage delivers energy sermon at the pump – just don’t mention the war
Detective Superintendent Jerome Caminada, of the Manchester City Police, died on 10 March 1914, aged 69, following a coach accident. He was known as 'a terror to evil-doers' and you can read his own accounts of his extraordinary career fighting crime in Victorian Manchester 🔗 tinyurl.com/5a3ttrkb
Brilliantly written piece.
"... the ways in which stupidity and evil become indistinguishable. With some ... it’s when a low-key, almost flippant toleration of wickedness becomes part of their equipage, as if it makes them feel better about who they really are."
Of course, I wasn’t advocating for Tarantino, just adding my thoughts to what should or shouldn’t be proscribed for a creator. I completely get that racist language (as well as other taboos) shouldn’t be included in, say, a kids’ show or an episode of Friends, but let ugliness be shown in drama.
Racist characters saying racist things isn’t something any writer should be afraid to show; if murder, rape and interpersonal violence are all acceptable parts of drama, as well as other sorts of slurs (such as misogyny or ableism) then why is that particular slur any different?
I think if you’re treating people with respect that’s the key thing. It’s hard to hear that language we’ve always used has altered nuance to the people it’s about, so I’m open to hearing that. However, I think there’s nothing wrong with ‘lady’, I wouldn’t be offended to be called a gentleman.
Some people just like scolding others and that kind of linguistic policing is a kind of power dynamic. Of course, it’s always wrong to use slurs and some once common terms age badly but I can’t see what’s insulting about referring to a human female as a lady.
There’s nothing wrong with calling a chap a chap and a lady a lady, unless the folk involved don’t identify that way.
To be left dead by attacks is the natural state of the Middle Easterner, while in the Western culture (also Israel somehow) being killed is a major taboo.
I actually dislike him more than Thatcher because he was Thatcher’s true heir but by stealth.
Still crazy that the president’s lawyer spent two days with Ghislaine Maxwell, she “cleared” him of wrongdoing and was almost immediately transferred to a more pleasant prison and nobody in the administration will explain it and the media acts like two large dots are just impossible to connect.
How heroic and inspirational! 😆🤡
The gulf between what people think of Tony Blair commenting on war in the Middle East & what Tony Blair thinks people think of Tony Blair commenting on war in the Middle East is positively Badenochian.
Say it loud, say it proud, WANDA is a neo noir
Average real wage of UK workers barely moved since 2008.
Some bosses collect 1,110 times the average worker pay.
50 families have more wealth than bottom 50% of the population combined.
Super-rich buy political parties and lawmakers to advance their interests.
Did you vote for the above?
Thanks for posting this. I’d never heard of Barbara Loden but I’ve just read the Wikipedia page about her; she was a really fascinating person.
Some of those machines and bombs are really expensive.
Another expenses-paid $$$$ earner!
"21,225 people voted for Nigel Farage in Clacton
They hoped he’d make life there better
Instead, he skips key meetings about its regeneration
But finds time to go to Florida & make speeches
He’s laughing at you, #Clacton"

Blair’s always gobbing off but I thought he’d vanished when the Mandelson stuff was in the news; sorry to see him back.
That’s a great and under seen film.
That’s a brilliant album, better than Joni Mitchell and James Taylor’s debut albums. I believe it sold poorly but the record company had just greenlit a contract for a second album about a week before the crash he died in. I have no doubt he would have been a major artist if he’d lived.
We’re one Reform term away from having to pay for healthcare, which is something that will probably take Labour two or maybe three terms to introduce.
Just appalling. I’m sure giving the key card to the sexual predator was an appalling error but the £30 refund offer can’t be interpreted as anything other than deliberate mockery.
I think the OP has spectacularly missed the point of Breaking Bad’s very knowing irony and ambiguity.
I’ve just been watching BBC South East Today and I’m absolutely aghast about a feature they’ve run on UK holiday makers stranded in Dubai; two different interviews with people moaning how their costs went up and their holidays were ruined. Just so offensively crass, zero awareness and empathy.

Bar chart showing total value or donations in 2025 to Reform UK (£18.6M), Tories (£13.4M), Labour (£9.1M), LibDems (£4.7M), Greens (£329K)
If it wasn't for 3 very wealthy donors bankrolling Farage’s Reform UK Party Ltd, their donations would total less than the Lib Dems.
