Once again, one of the most revealing & utterly demoralizing aspects of the last year or so has been the very transparent eagerness of so many of our academic colleagues, administrators, & leaders to reveal just how completely they are uninterested in the actual projects of teaching & research.

Or, to change the metaphor slightly, professional investment may be likened to those newspaper competitions in which the competitors have to pick out the six prettiest faces from a hundred photographs, the prize being awarded to the competitor whose choice most nearly corresponds to the average preferences of the competitors as a whole; so that each competitor has to pick, not those faces which he himself finds prettiest, but those which he thinks likeliest to catch the fancy of the other competitors, all of whom are looking at the problem from the same point of view. It is not a case of choosing those which, to the best of one’s judgment, are really the prettiest, nor even those which average opinion genuinely thinks the prettiest. We have reached the third degree where we devote our intelligences to anticipating what average opinion expects the average opinion to be. And there are some, I believe, who practise the fourth, fifth and higher degrees.

Watching the timeline try to parse market reactions to Trump's Thought of the Day on Iran and reminding everyone that it's never not a good day to read Ch. 12 of Keynes's General Theory.

Allies fear Iran war will leave them without US weapons they bought European and Asian countries worry the Pentagon is burning through munitions so fast that it won’t have enough to send the weapons they have purchased.

One of the many costs in European and global security from the Iran war.

"American allies are watching in disbelief as the Pentagon reroutes weapon shipments to aid the Iran war, angry and scared that arms the U.S. demanded they buy will never reach them."

Don’t let mega-constellation-building billionaires steal your night sky Satellites are wonders of modern technology that have improved all of our lives. But having more than a million of them in orbit could destroy our view of the heavens and seriously damage our planet

Elon Musk has already started plans to launch a million satellites.

Yes. A MILLION.

This is a colossally bad idea, and it's not too late to make your voice heard. I explain everything:

A Maya settlement in today’s northwestern Belize persisted past the abandonment of many contemporaneous Classic Period urban centers. The community used raised earthen, stone, and wood structures to access the rich resources of the wetland. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/JKA250Yq7n2

The Most Chilling Detail in the U.S. Attack on an Iranian Naval Ship The Iranian warship was taking part in an international exercise with many other countriesβ€”including the United States.

This is a chilling crime. A shame on our country. The Iranian ship was unarmed. The US knew this. The sailors were murdered by our navy, and the survivors were left to die at sea.
