Folks, it’s a highly sophisticated machine that is learning to read you and flatter your ego the more you interact with it. This is how Doctor Who episodes start.

I read two very different posts today on interactions with ChatGPT that told the querent exactly what they wanted to hear, using identical rhetoric and flattery to appeal to the querent’s ego, and some of its facts were dead wrong but just validating the person’s opinion.

Nobody involved in social movements / direct action / social work / legal aid ever uses the word “felon” as a pejorative. This is a fundamental disconnect between moderates who love to dunk on Trump and those who work and organize every day on the front lines of injustice.

As I'm thinking about my book, Slow Magic, and thinking about the complex problems many of us face, I thought that I and others need the reminder to step back and think about simple steps. I thought of a little meme series to make called "We can do hard things." It's a nice little lift to work on.

I'm not sure it makes sense strategically to attack a car someone's already bought.

My bigger issue is that it just looks like someone is proudly driving a car with swastikas on it. That is pretty unsettling and sends the opposite message that I am generously assuming was intended.

There is a white Tesla outside of my office on which someone spraypainted red swastikas.

I imagine this was meant as an attack against Elon Musk as a display of aggression toward his company and to discourage anyone supporting Musk.

Then Facebook did something different, acted different, updated the all-mighty algorithm, and I was back to very few clicks a day. Multiple filters allow for depth. Last week we reflected on how each story and perspective is a filter over perception, and like a colored filter on a lens, each filter reveals certain things and obscures certain things about what is. Sitting with this, it feels like now is the time to clarify what side of the line you’re on, and part of me recoils from the thought. Such clarity can be as empowering as it could put us into danger.
