Unexpectedly stopped by the grocery store last weekend while waiting to pick up an item I would later have to return and came upon some fulsome leeks so of course I made leek confit and now I have leek confit for my scrambled eggs and sometimes life can just be so beautiful you know.

I sometimes worry that too many people think being a good critic means being a self-righteous dick about every little thing and I think far too many miss the point that you can't critique anything if you don't know how to love something.

It’s a hard thing to describe if you weren’t there in 2003 but it really did feel like you were insane for protesting the Iraq war. The entire country, especially in the media and at elite levels, was so gung-ho.

Compressing all of the absolute idiocy of the first three years of the Iraq war into a week and a half really is quite a feat.

Denmark responded to 1973 oil crisis by reducing car-dependency. Let's do that now. - Streetsblog Chicago "The government had to introduce car-free Sundays. And then people realized that the car-free Sunday was the best day of the week."

FYI the 1970s oil crisis was the impetus for Copenhagen turning into a cycling city

Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..

Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.

This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.

44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.

Yeah that’s a bit of my broader point. The same thing happened to media broadly, moving from blue collar shoe leather reporting to credentialed analysis. Also explains (incompletely!) eg trans panic, woke backlash, Trump credulity, ignoring Epstein, etc etc

Anthropic and the Pentagon - Schneier on Security OpenAI is in and Anthropic is out as a supplier of AI technology for the US defense department. This news caps a week of bluster by the highest officials in the US government towards some of the wealt...

The reason this post by Bruce Schneier is more coherent — and better analysis — is because he’s spent decades writing about complex technical topics for a diverse audience, not the past five years trying to get invited to Marc Andreessen’s luxury apocalypse bunker

I’ve lately come to understand the writing of Thompson, Smith, et al less as coherent analysis and more as class solidarity with VC and finance, especially post-pandemic.

The ZIRP era when these drips made all their easy money also included a largely credulous press that was bought in on SV’s project to technocraticize the post- end of history. I’m glad WIRED at least is pushing back now that tech is mask off.

Well at least the big 3 automakers didn’t pull back from their already modest EV commitments and double down on full size trucks last year.

The way everyone regardless of race, creed, or religion treats the posted speed limit as a floor with 15mph of ceiling — whether in a school parking lot, residential street, or highway — is going to be what turns me into Michael Douglas in FALLING DOWN.

There’s a bit in HERE COMES THE SUN about how the rotation of the earth does for free what we spend so much money and carbon on — transporting energy — that it expanded my view of the universe in a small but important way.

Are you telling me the guy with one other startup, a Foursquare clone that failed so badly he had to sell it to a company that makes its daily bread on prepaid debit cards, and a tenure running a VC finishing school wasn’t able to meet the moment on the power of dank memes? Well I’ll be.
