Most important result of the night (for my little town), First Selectman Bernie Dennler wins reelection in Colchester, CT, along with a clean sweep by Dems across all races.
Mamdani!
Anxiously waiting for the results of our small town race, hoping this shows brighter things ahead.
Iβm on my local D town committee. I think if you are active in the party political sense, this win can mean a lot. Iβm also in a neighboring state where our total population is smaller than that of NYC, so itβs meaningful to us.
ADHD medication linked to lower risk of suicidal behaviours, study suggests
From a Semafor article about the New York Times's decision to print an articleβmultiple articles, actuallyβon Zohran Mamdani's college application. "The fact that this story engendered all the conversation and debate that it has feels like all the evidence you need that this was a legit line of reporting," one senior reporter told Semafor.
Legitimate reporting and illegitimate reporting both engender conversation and debate.
But while legitimate reporting inspires conversation about a story's substance, illegitimate reporting inspires questions like "Why did the newspaper print this garbage?"

America is beautiful, contradictory, unfinished. I am proud of our country even as we constantly strive to make it better, to protect and deepen our democracy, to fulfill its promise for each and every person who calls it home.
Happy Independence Day. No Kings in America.
Summer solstice in Connecticut. Toasting vegan marshmallows while fireflies dance around us.
Fascinating. In the US taking attendance institutionally (or not) triggers different federal financial aid requirements. Weβre non-attendance taking, so push for ways to have active engagement recorded at the individual course/module level. No $$ spent on this type of thing.
Yikes! My eldest child had cavities when very young and we discovered we had well water with zero fluoride. Supplements were super important for us, and Iβm sure are a reason that my second kid stayed cavity free.
The movie is like the reality. Itβs amazing - the best of Europe. If only the UK had set the Brexit referendum for the same week as Eurovision. Maybe the result would have been different.
Three people in a selfie in front of the town flag of Colchester CT
I just moderated my first town meeting; a road discontinuance, decided by the citizens of Colchester, CT. Fun to try this out supported by our town clerk and first selectman. Transferable skills from academic governance! One day I might be ready to moderate the town budget meeting. . .
Some have data on time use. Also many problems with use, but it is another interesting point to compare with attendance.
Do you ever analyze this in the context of other data points (e.g., LMS engagement). Does correlation with attendance break down if students have high engagement in other areas? Or is class attendance also highly correlated with all other engagement? What about prior achievement?

A child on a saucer swing hanging from a tree in the foreground with another child on a bike further back. The setting is a grassy landscape with trees to the rear and an orange sunset.
A child in a green shirt has their back to the camera. They sit on a simple log bench in woodland, facing an orange sunset reflected into a pond.
Any long day at work transforms when I get home to this.
Lower level admin is a particular space for knowing when you have to keep quiet about the things that are central to your job. The absences are growing ever more notable.
I also started out confused by why so few of my colleagues at that initial institution had been to public universities. Thatβs so funny to think about how naive I was back then.
She did! But she was from LA, did her PhD at Berkeley, and ended up at the University of Manchester. She had distance from east coast elite instructions. The Little Ivies (one of which I landed at) are also defined by their athletic league.
I knew this because my US PhD advisor explained the American institutional hierarchy to me back in the UK before applying to US jobs.
Accreditation changes are coming. Ironic that this quiet corner that underpins institutional quality could be in the political crosshairs. #AcademicSky
The image is a screenshot of a tweet from Brandon Bradford (@BrandonLBradfor ). The tweet reads: "Deporting Americans without due process then saying they no longer get due process because they arenβt in America means no one has rights, FYI. Nightmare scenario."
If you think this canβt happen, remember that of the 125,000 Japanese Americans who were interned during WWII for years without charge or trial, two-thirds were U.S. citizens. Including me.
The @heardislandgov.bsky.social account is making me smile this morning. But it does leave me wondering, what kind of penguin was Pingu?
Another terrible thing in a long list of terrible things. But I hope things get figured out for you at a local level.
I remember the fair trade dream when countries were given the chance of trading their way out of poverty.
Botswana for instance through diamonds - now subject to a 37% tariff.
The Ivory Coast through cocoa - now contending with a tariff of 21%.
How will they cope?
So good. π€‘
