Yeah I hope so. I feel super negative to flag this stuff but having worked with some charities recently, it's quite hard not to, especially when you see who funds them and how their money was made. Just all... quite depressing π« π« π«

Working as an SEO consultant & trying to find a way to slowly transition to a non-bullshit job π Currently trying to get as many people as possible to start De-Googling - join us at https://degoogle.online/

I say this not because food banks are bad or evil (of course they're not) just that they are a failure because they don't tackle rising inequality and never will based on their current structure. It won't be until they turn on their funders that they make progress - and this will never happen.
This is lacking because they are largely funded and propped up by the very establishment which they should be seeking to overthrow (!) and so they are stuck in this paradoxical situation where they exist solely to cater to this urgent need (quite literally, they are hand to mouth)...
Trussell trust
Unpopular opinion - I don't like how food banks (etc) push societies problems back onto the people. It shouldn't be on us to prop up food banks. It should be on the establishment and the 1%.
Food banks exist as a very temporary fix, to a problem that they have the inability to tackle properly...

Iran accuses the US and Israel of targeting civilians, saying more than 1,300 have been killed across the country.
I follow the news around local data center resistance fairly closely. This one stands out.
How much more evidence do we need? The ultra-rich and the governments supporting them will destroy everything for the sake of profit, power and pride. Nothing is precious to them - not human life, not the living world - except their own wealth and status. Our survival depends on resisting them.
ethical alternatives to Google Chrome browser
Hosted a webinar last Friday - Ethical alternatives to Google Chrome browser.

Post about rutger bregman
Thought I wrote a banger of a post earlier but it hardly got seen - perhaps it didn't like the swearing? Or perhaps it detected that it was even 'too angry' for the algorithm?
Who knows!!
a map of openai's influence on other media companies
Amazing site here via @timnitgebru.bsky.social - a map of big tech influence on media and media companies.
imo this goes a decent way to explaining why coverage of AI specifically has been so shockingly bad recently. Very useful resource!!

(thanks for the support here! if you are wondering why I have a green tinge I am currently poorly, hence the "I hope I don't throw up during the webinar" speech bubble).

just spitballing but some of it might have something to do with 15 years of sociopathic behavior culminating in the enthusiastic embrace of violent fascism

china bad because of state surveillance
america good because of corporate surveillance that also gets wielded by the state
Reading a bloody good book at the moment (forgive my language) - 99th Day: A Warning About Technology by Gerry McGovern.
I wish anyone working in the Green Transitionβ’οΈ would read it - and then reconsider their position.

Last year I began to research and document the ways in which Reddit has been silencing the voice of Palestinians.
Drop Site News were going to publish this but pulled out.
If anyone can hook me up with a potential outlet who will run this - let me know! π
Wow.
OKAY BIG ONE FOR YA
NEW report out today: I dig deep into how big tech has been muddling tech types and overstating evidence to claim "AI" will make global emissions drop like a stone....
Not only will it not, it seems to be verifiably doing the opposite!!

A question I keep asking myself - it's good to have left Twitter (X) - but in doing so, do we not just end up joining or creating our own echo-chambers?
Are we not "leaving behind" others who (arguably) need the exposure to alternative views, to be challenged, and so on?
π€π€π€
Yes, you are probably right. Limited space in these columns and also perhaps not the right medium to go into specifics.
A good day to read this book
@timschwab.bsky.social
Maybe sometimes - I think if you're new to his work and you just read this piece (and some other bits of his) you might miss that. Maybe I am just being pedantic π€·ββοΈ
Not sure if most people know this - people think that we can use more energy because it is renewable. Energy usage in the global north is only going to rise (see data centers, AI and so on).
For me the simpler option is a reduction in the way we use energy - I don't see much talk of this.
Idea for a quick + easy Google Chrome extension:
1 - Find any mention of a billionaire linked to Epstein from the files.
2 - Append this with the text (..."friend of sex offender Epstein").
3 - Launch on Chrome Extension Store.
4 - Pitch to some journalists/outlets + social media
5 - ?
6 - Profit
What I struggle a bit with - is Jason's idea that we (as a society) need to decide what is harmful or not, what we need to reduce, and so on.
But at the same time... our society argues over the colour of the sky, whether water is wet (!)... I can never see this happening sadly.
My personal leaning is that energy reduction (in the global north) has to be the no1 priority. More important than the big Green Transitionβ’οΈ.
For me there is no such thing as green energy. Perhaps greener than some forms.
Breaking: on two counts, the High Court has ruled that the Labour government's proscription of the campaign group Palestine Action was unlawful β a win for its co-founder Huda Ammori, who sought a judicial review of the ban
A great article by @jasonhickel.bsky.social and @yanisvaroufakis.bsky.social. But I do wish we could all stop using the wolf as a metaphor for the worst kinds of human behaviour. Wolves are wonderful creatures, endlessly maligned - and also victims of capitalism.
