Typesetting on the Web just got more beautiful! Support for `text-wrap: pretty` has landed in Safari Technology Preview 216. @jensimmons.bsky.social's post on the WebKit blog explains how this improves typography in multiple ways: no more ragged edges, poor hyphenation, or short last lines.

Better typography with text-wrap pretty Support for text-wrap: pretty just shipped in Safari Technology Preview, bringing an unprecedented level of polish to typography on the web.

I’m super excited about `text-wrap: pretty`. It does a lot more to improve typography than you might expect β€”Β at least in Safari Technology Preview 216.

It improves all lines of text, not just the last 4. It enhances hyphenation & rag, not just avoiding short last lines.

It's so good! We've been playing Split Fiction for the past week and have really been enjoying it.

cmd/compile: slow escape analysis in large package in the typescript compiler Β· Issue #72815 Β· golang/go Go version go version go1.24.1 linux/amd64 Output of go env in your module/workspace: AR='ar' CC='gcc' CGO_CFLAGS='-O2 -g' CGO_CPPFLAGS='' CGO_CXXFLAGS='-O2 -g' CGO_ENABLED='1' CGO_FFLAGS='-O2 -g' ...

It currently takes unusually long to build the new TypeScript compiler codebase (written in Go). Mere hours after this issue was reported, @thepudds.bsky.social put up a fix that speeds up compilation by ~5x, reducing the build time from ~91s to ~17s. This is so cool to see! Open source FTW.

I can imagine it must’ve been difficult to keep this under wraps for so long. That said β€” congratulations on the announcement! Really good stuff :)
