We’re 6 years into this current console generation and you still can’t build a competitive PC for the same price as a PS5/Series X. You can build better ones for more, but the consoles have a lock on that price/performance metric specifically because of the work Microsoft and Sony have done.

There’s a lot of optimizations Microsoft alone can do, that don’t even require third party. At the silicon level, at the os level, and at the directX level.

If successful a developer shouldn’t have to do anything to make a game run better on the Xbox then on an equivalent PC.

It doesn’t need to be subsidized to beat on price/performance. There’s a lot of optimizations Microsoft alone can do with a custom SoC and directX that PC builders using off the shelf consumer components can’t.

Custom SoC will allow it to hit above its weight class. If executed well it will likely be the best performance per dollar in the PC space.

There’s also some niche optimizations Microsoft could do that PCs typically can’t, like shader precompilation. It should outcompete any similar priced pc.

Booo Computer Engineers! Stop taking all the fun out of computer programming with your allocation optimizations. Booo!

Cool, Will this be a regular podcast (released on a schedule) or will it be more adhoc based on topics?

They use text-to-speech algorithms on items and locations for voice lines.

I haven’t played the game so I’m not exactly sure what that is going to mean.

As a rule of thumb I prefer fully voiced acted lines. But I don’t mind text-to-speech for accessibility or highly dynamic contents.

To be fair, they claim to not use gen ai for art, which is what people actually care about. Nobody really cares if a games uses it for code. Pretty much every single AAA game is using generative ai for game code. Ai has become a defacto tool for programmers in all industries.

Not a game dev, but am a dev.

It’s possible. Depends on the timeframe and what tech they used.

If they used just basic computer clusters and open source databases, that would be sus in a year.

If they used off-the-shelf clusters like aws GameLift and dbs like oracle, then yeah, probably easily.

I have always described it as a fusion of Horizon: Zero Dawn and Rick and Morty.

A sort of fantastical but weird.

I also think cities that want to increase adoption of EVs may be hesitant to add fees to home charging.

Like theoretically a city could just charge an increasing permit for for 50,60,70,80amp services to encourage 30 amp charging. But that could be taken as a sort of ev disincentive.

I think the main reason is there just isn’t much of a cost difference between running a 50 amp cable vs a 30 amp cable.

Oh nice it’s just markdown. I’m ok with that.

Great game, best I’ve played all year. but also only about 40 hours long, I wouldn’t expect it to be in many people’s top played games by playtime.

That doesn’t make sense? Where did you hear that?

Consoles include 1 version of all the art assets. PCs include multiple versions for configuration.

I would hope that the use of CAD software would mitigate the risk by ensuring everything is validated by some classical calculations/simulations before construction.

Although If a structure has any electronically controlled active stabilization or monitoring, ai generated software could lead to 😬

If you count self driving collisions as engineering failures then it’s already happened.

Though I’m assuming you mean more specifically structural engineering.

I knew I was missing something.

I just couldn’t tell if it was in heat amount or in the assumption that it was a closed system.

I supposed if you were draining refrigerated water from the humidifier you would have hacked together a sort of geothermal heater. Using utility water as a ‘reservoir’.

One thing I’m still confused about is when you put humidifiers in the same room as a dehumidifier. Did that bring the temperature up higher than an equivalently powered resistive heater? Or are the humidifiers pulling more watts than I’m expecting.

I didn’t choose subjects, just picked whatever fit in gaps in the major. My commute was ~40mins, so I wanted a compact schedule, I couldn’t easily leave and return.

I took dinosaurs, Russian literature, anthropology, ancient history, symbolic logic, digital art, stars, bioinformatics and geology.
