Every year in Metro Vancouver, car crashes kill 100 people. We can get to zero by demanding that governments design transportation systems to put safety first. http://linkin.bio/visionzeroyvr

Funding to save Vancouver Car Free Days unanimously approved by council Vancouver city council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve $30,000 in funding to prevent the cancellation of a popular summer event this year.

Huge thanks to @lucymaloney.bsky.social and @seanorr.bsky.social who brought a motion to fund Car Free Day and prevent its cancellation! And kudos to all of council for passing this unanimously. We will see you there!

Sad to say that despite Councilors @rebeccaleebligh.bsky.social @lucymaloney.bsky.social @ptfry.bsky.social @seanorr.bsky.social tabling an amendment to save these important road safety motions (and a couple others), the ABC majority voted together to kill them. So much effort undone.

As a short adult (157 cm) most new trucks have hoods over my head.
They can’t see me, or most kids under 12.

This photo shows the danger so many mobility scooters face - hoods that are taller than they are. And this car isn't even that large compared to some of the cars on our roads.

In 2023 Clr Boyle had a motion to reduce the speed on Cornwall to 30km/h. Clr Klassen amended it to 40km/h instead, under the guise of an umbrella of further safety improvements which he bragged about.

Now, the city is recommending no further action. All we got was a deadlier speed.

The "Rollback Report": ABC's austerity budget is pausing, terminating, or rolling back several of the road safety wins we (and so many of you) fought so hard to achieve. This is beyond disappointing.

Based on Toronto and Montreal numbers adjusted for population, Vancouver bike share could easily double or triple its yearly ridership.

In short, this motion includes both a report back on expanding bike share in Vancouver, and advocacy for a regional, coordinated approach to be lead by TransLink.

Better bike share = better mobility options, safer streets, reduced traffic congestion and better health outcomes.

44 Ticketed in North Shore Distracted Driving Crackdown North Shore officers issued 44 tickets in just two hours during a targeted distracted-driving enforcement operation.

44 tickets in only two hours. Imagine the impact if they spent more than the occasional 2-hour β€œblitz” on traffic enforcement. Well, they don’t have the resources for that, which is why we need automated enforcement. Everywhere. www.northshoredailypost.com/44-ticketed-...

TRUCK SIDE GUARDS: This unanimously passed motion from @rebeccaleebligh.bsky.social July 2022 after AgustΓn BeltrΓ‘n was killed in a crash this could have prevented. Now the city has upgraded 'some' of the fleet (how many vehicles??) and continuing would require 'substantial funding'

BUS LANES: There were 9 bus lane corridors promised in this unanimously passed motion from @christineboyle.bsky.social back in summer 2024, with implementation at a rate of at least 2 corridors per year. New recommendation is to postpone 4 of these (which we'll note are already off schedule)

Several previously passed road safety motions are recommended to be postponed or scaled back at the March 10th Vancouver Council mtg, "with the objective of freeing up staff capacity in order to better implement Council’s priorities"

This is what happens when you starve the city budget.

I'm so sad--but also frustrated!--by this.

I LOVE Car Free Day. It was such a fun way to see what our streets COULD be: full of life, family, community, and local business...not just cars.

Something is very, very wrong in Vancouver when such a wildly popular event can't make it work.
