Seated Puppy by Izumi Sukeyuki This endearing boxwood carving by the Meiji-period artist Izumi Sukeyuki (1838–1918) depicts a plump, seated puppy with a charmingly soulful expression. The figure is carved with exceptional detail, showcasing the artist's mastery of the medium; the puppy's fur is rendered with thousands of fine, textured lines that give the wood a soft, tactile appearance. Its large, dark eyes are inlaid, creating a lifelike gaze as it looks slightly upward. A distinctive feature of the sculpture is the braided rope or strap that the puppy holds firmly in its mouth, which loops over its back and appears to be attached to a large, heavy sack resting against its side. The warm, dark patina of the boxwood highlights the smooth contours of the puppy's body and the intricate knots of the rope. This work is a wonderful example of netsuke or small-scale Japanese sculpture, capturing a moment of quiet, playful determination with both technical precision and deep character.
