HI Alex, yes agreed they do, I'll put them out in a bed in May when they are the size of pencils.
Leek & potato soup no doubt. But let me enjoy summer first 😀🌞
Leek seedlings in a tray in the allotment greenhouse, thin and slightly leggy but healthy. Varieties are Giant d’Inverno, Musselburgh and Bleu de Solaise, sown 20 February in homemade organic seed compost and planned to be planted outside in May. 🌱
Leek seedlings stretching for the light. Sown 20 February into homemade seed compost and up quickly: Giant d’Inverno, Musselburgh and Bleu de Solaise. A bit leggy but healthy - they’ll toughen up when they reach the bed in May. 🌱 #kitchengarden
Three cats linger outside the metal gates of an allotment garden, waiting on the path as if expecting someone to arrive. One ginger cat lies stretched out on the ground, relaxed but watchful, while the other two sit nearby, upright and alert, focused on the entrance. Behind them, rows of allotment plots and a line of garages frame the scene, suggesting these cats know the place well and associate gardeners with activity — and perhaps the occasional scrap or mouse.
The band’s back together. Three cats hanging around outside the allotment today.
A fog-filled riverside path lined with bare winter trees. The path curves gently forward but disappears into thick mist after only a short distance, giving the scene an eerie, cinematic feel. The ground is damp and the branches form a loose tunnel overhead, framing the pale grey fog that swallows the distance. It looks quiet, slightly unsettling, like the opening shot of a supernatural film, though in reality it’s just a cold morning walk toward the allotment along the riverbank.
Fog along the river on the walk to the allotment this morning.
For a moment it looked like a Hammer Horror film set.
Then a jackdaw started shouting. Suddenly it was Poe.
Aloha Alexa 👋
Deana holds a slice of sourdough she has just cut from a loaf she baked. Her hands form the familiar heart shape, but the slice of bread sits between them instead of her fingers completing it. In the crumb there is a large heart-shaped hole, naturally formed in the open structure of the loaf. The crust is dark and well baked, and the crumb airy and irregular. The slice lines up neatly with the gesture, as if the bread itself is returning the sentiment.
Today’s sourdough revealed a heart in the crumb. I will take that as approval from the starter. 🫵🏻ــــــــــــــــﮩ٨ـ❤️️ #alveoli
Coffee and toast here.
That patisserie display now has me reconsidering my breakfast choices.
Good article, thanks for sharing.
I have several Yukon seed potatoes 'chitting' at the moment in the greenhouse and will be planted in 2 weeks as second earlies.
Almost unfair to post a photo like this. I can practically smell it.
A few years ago in Marrakech I’d wander the back streets around dinner time - tagines bubbling away behind half-open doors, citrus, spice, slow-cooked meat. The air was thick with it.
I've had several questions about the preserved oranges in my cocktail earlier. This is the most obvious instance of what you'd do with the resulting preserved fruit. You can treat any citrus like the famous Moroccan preserved lemons, and yes, they add so much to North African stews.
Hear, hear!
I have been unspeakably busy for the past couple of weeks, and so my partner Vivian kindly stepped in with a guest post on a subject very close to her heart: the Yukon Gold potato
A young Carolina Reaper chilli pepper growing in its stage-two pot, originally sown in a custom organic seed compost mix and now repotted into a blend of biochar and homemade seed compost. The plant shows around ten leaves of varying size and a stronger central stem. Marked with a date-of-birth label dated 14/01/2026. This is Week 8 in a weekly grow series tracking the progress of one of the world’s hottest chilli peppers from seed to harvest.

Week eight. Ten leaves now, some still small. Repotted into its stage-two pot with an updated soil mix of biochar and homemade seed compost.

Ahh, thanks, Mike, I gotta say pretty damn good on a slice of fresh sourdough
The secret is getting the marmalade to setting point. Rolling boil for from 20 mins. Then i test in 5 minute increments using the crinkle test! The time varies from batch to batch! If it doesn't set first time you can return contents to the pan at any point and reboil. That always works.
Thanks, handwritten and handmade - only way to go ✍️
As soon as the new site is launched. If you like rum then it's a must.
Hi Paul, rum goes soooo well with oranges, I couldn't resist a batch and will now be on yearly rotation. 👓
Cool, we did blood orange last year, makes a nice marmalade.
Several freshly bottled jars of Seville orange marmalade arranged on a rustic wooden farm table. The set is bright and clear, some made with Doorly’s rum, others with Glenfiddich Scotch. The jars are still new from the pot, light catching the peel, ready for toast.
End of Seville season. Last batch set last week.
Doorly’s rum in some, Glenfiddich Scotch in others.
Bitterness first, sweetness after. As it should be. 🍊🥃

The simple act of sitting side by side, folding dumplings, is customary at Lunar New Year. A simple tradition, yet a powerful symbol of togetherness 🥟
These hand-folded lamb dumplings, from the founder of BAO, are perfect for the celebrations 🎆

Just a tiny sliver of the fruit this plant produces will knock your socks off, Bob - we pickle ours. 🌶️
Some like it hot 🔥🔥
A small seedling pot containing a Carolina Reaper chilli pepper, sown in a custom organic seed compost mix, now measuring 8.5 cm tall with a leaf span of 12 cm. The plant shows fuller growth and a stronger central stem. Marked with a date-of-birth label dated 14/01/2026. This is Week 7 in a weekly grow series tracking the progress of one of the world’s hottest chilli pepper from seed to harvest.

Week seven. Now 8.5 cm tall with a wingspan of 12 cm. Still compact, but clearly strengthening and filling out. The next move will be its stage-two pot. #SeedToHarvest 👩🌾🌱
