That makes coloring most individual parts easier since you don't need to worry about any external edges. If i'm extra smart I'll try and do something similar on lines I know will be color boundaries so I can use a fill bucket with expansion to do most of the flatting.

The one thing that's helped me is trying to force myself to draw with more intention on silhouettes (since I usually do 1-2 primaries then a "line art"/more finished sketch) so at the very least I can auto select the whole silhouette from the outside->invert->fill and lock layer.
