Our most recent ep is about fostering curiosity if you have a young person in your life who's getting interested in bugs. We have a lot more in the works on everything from convergent evolution to extremeophile insects. So yeah! Check out Bug Note. New ones drop every week ππͺ²π

Some facts I learned in our third episode :
β’ There are around a million named species of bugs and bug-adjacent critters
β’ There may be more than twice as many science hasn't even named yet !
β’ For every person you see each day, there are over a billion insects !!

Bug Note Podcast S1E2: All You Bug Haters
YouTube video by Natural History Museum of Utah
I know some folks just think bugs are icky and that's the end of the discussion... But one of the main scientists I talk with argues that attitude undermines many people's enjoyment of and appreciation of the natural world and going outside, and might be worth a rethink. youtu.be/3AVX5uC2UCE?...

One of the nicest compliments an editor ever gave my writing was "quirky yet erudite." I like to think Bug Note carries that same spirit forward, like when my dog makes a cameo in the above episode, underscoring a point about different ways we use the word bug in casual and scientific settings.

Bug Note Podcast S1E1: What is a Bug?
YouTube video by Natural History Museum of Utah
𧡠Hi Bluesky, it's been a minute. A fun thing you might not know is that I host a new show called Bug Note with @nhmu.bsky.social. It's about the wiggly, wild, weird world of bugs. Audio versions are on Spotify, and video versions are on YouTube:

All four episodes of this powerful series from @rosegilbert.bsky.social and @wpln.bsky.social are out now. Working as a fact checker on this project these last few months was, by turns, edifying, heartrending, and delightful. Give it a listen.

Oh hey! I took home this dope Jedit from an event in Jackson, Michigan last month, where the art is also a mural.

I just ordered the book from my local shop the other day! And will mention the beta test idea to a colleague. Looking forward to learning more

Mostly searching around online I've found other resources that bear out the details, but so far none connecting these dots so succinctly and conversationally. Which is a roundabout way of saying, if nothing else, your past work is fondly remembered!

Oh wowβthat would be amazing, but don't go out of your way just for me. For what it's worth, I do have a PDF of the old thread stored here... But for curious climate people, an archive of a deleted Twitter thread feels a little thin.

I appreciate you looking! My search managed to turn up a bunch of other posts where you mention e.g. Panama, but not that thread on why we're not looking at a return to the Pliocene despite similar CO2 levels today. Would love to find it... or other resources you'd point me to... or a 2025 sequel!

Did it survive the migration to here? If so I'm struggling to find it, but I'd really love to revisit a resource along those lines if one exists.

@jacquelyngill.bsky.social Hi Dr. Gill β back in the Twitter days (RIP) you had an absolute banger of a thread on why, although CO2 levels are now on par with the mid-Pliocene, that's not what our world is going to look like, thanks to things like the Greenland Ice Sheet + the Isthmus of Panama...

I sure picked a heck of a time to read Disasterology by @samlmontano.bsky.social. I'm still processing it but found it full of worthwhile information and compelling details and extremely worth my attention. Might be worth yours, too...

I read a bunch of @doctorvive.bsky.social's book "The Language of Climate Politics" in a hurry to get ready for an interview with her back in September, but I only recently actually finished the audiobook in full. Came here just to report it was worth my time and might be worth yours, too.
