Yes it’s all terrible and also I remember working there when they rolled out their take on poutine and I’ll tell ya what, it wasn’t poutine but it was deliciously awful in its own way

I love this stupidly bad franchise I cannot be convinced otherwise

BWW remains the hero we deserve, never the one we need

If there are no more BWW fans, I am no longer on this earth

Spring forward The reigning optimist of seasons

The mess, the discomfort, the growth of spring

Even as it feels like the world is being tipped on its axis, spring is still as it has been: foreboding for some, not yet announced for others. Too much, or not enough. Green with new growth while the heavy brown mud remains.

The natural messiness, a balm.

Marks in the heartwood A pinecone, a quail, and Smokey Bear walk into a tattoo shop

This is a bit of a tattoo tour, a bit of a life tour, a history of long-lived beings and the marks they’ve acquired over millennia, and a commitment to making permanent the images and symbols and memories that make us human

Marks in the heartwood A pinecone, a quail, and Smokey Bear walk into a tattoo shop

A few years ago, pundits remarked on celebrities who decided to remove their tattoos (Pete Davidson was the most notable, among others) as a rise in social conservatism. Now that we’ve arrived at that moment, some are doubling down on art and meaning

Thanks, Sherrilyn. Note, there are about 8 million+ U.S. #Adoptees. Hundreds of thousands were severed from their countries of origins by intercountry adoption and do not have "original birth certificates." Most US born adoptees don't either. They ALL would be impacted disproportionately too.

The company has been buying up small, rural water companies since 2018, and is threatening to raise rates.

If that isn’t an indication that Wall Street realizes the climate crisis is here — that water will quickly become a commodity — I don’t know what is.

When the well runs dry Boil water for 2-3 minutes, until the contaminants are removed

A few years ago, some shadowy investor group bought the company that ran, maintained, and serviced our community well. As I’m sure will not come as a surprise, we’ve had more boil advisories, more downtown, and less reliable service since

The Thorofare Finding meaning among the herd

If you’ve forded a river, you know slow going. You know the fight for
inches, the burn of trying to hold yourself upright against the current, the trust you have to place in feet you cannot see.

This is what community-building often feels like.

Not to say it’s not worth trying, just that being in a relationship with any other person is work! It takes time! Inconvenience! Adapting to others’ needs as if they were your own!

It’s more important now than ever to decide to do the hard work, to get uncomfortable, and care about others.

Write of way Making sense in a senseless world

Writing is, in itself, a show of resistance in senseless times because it is a deeply human feat of sitting with ourselves, our emotions, and our humanity. If it wasn’t, AI wouldn’t be pushed down our throats by those in power

Anyway, it didn’t deter the students, who are braver than the dude behind the wheel of the truck will ever be.

Most other cars driving through honked, waved, clapped, etc. This is a semi-rural agricultural community, and there were probably 30-50 adults protesting out there with the students.

Now that we’re in the era of influencer journalism, which is often pseudo-journalism, I believe people will only further associate the practice of journalism alongside building a personal brand and monetizing it. That is the logical conclusion of journalism under capitalism.

My, how you've grown On never going it alone

I went back to Joshua Tree last week because I was desperately homesick a few weeks ago and booked a ticket to ease my heart. As always, the desert knew exactly what I needed even when I couldn’t

This is about growth, yes, but also about the space that exists in some places to make mistakes, to try hard, and to become the best possible version of yourself when the entire world is telling you it’s bad to care, to have empathy, to feel things. It may not feel radical, but it does feel right

High pressure system An eerie winter draped in false promises and constant dread

Leaves are budding here in the PNW. In the middle of January. Where the light is low and soft instead of strong and warm. It’s another contribution to the unease settling in this winter, one marked by more ICE in the streets than ice on the ground

MORMONS: look its very clear that God and his established authority on the earth, do not have the power to actually influence sporting events. Thats why BYU doesn't win anything important. That would be way too hard

POPE (roller skating backwards while eating a hot dog) not that hard

This is about Minneapolis. This is about every place before and every place after. It is about big progressive cities and small rural towns. It is about tapping our roots system to provide support, care, and aid to those currently most vulnerable.

the vulnerable. Those that bloomed too early and lost valuable energy to building leaves that were destined to fail. Those at risk of disease and invasive species. To survive, the forest must work together.

A big metaphor, but apt.

It’s a big metaphor, but apt. The only way the plants will survive through the hot, dry summers that are now common in the PNW will be by tapping ancient root and fungi networks, a way for the forest to work together to ensure they all survive. They’ll share resources, info, and warnings to protect
