The campaign doesn’t only reflect a revival of anti-Muslim fearmongering but a resurrection of McCarthyism, the failed and deeply unconstitutional 1950s campaign by Sen. Joe McCarthy to ferret out communists in the US. Shea frequently cites McCarthy as an American hero.
