It's hard to overstate the now viral Mang0 winners interview where he passionately describes the Melee scene as cockroaches who'd play for $20 in their garages. Having been shut down or threatened with such multiple time, this wasn't even an exaggeration. We really did that shit.
Incidentally, Smash Melee is 24 years old which is older than the average splatoon player 🤔😂
But all joking aside, without the grassroots Melee scene (documented in The Smash Bros, if you like hours long vintage YouTube), it's likely Nintendo games outside Pokemon wouldn't have LAN scenes
